Asheville, we’ve got some exciting news heading your way! The Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project has just announced that the much-loved 2024 Farm Tour is returning on the weekend of September 21–22. Mark your calendars, because this is an event you won’t want to miss!
The Farm Tour will run from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, showcasing a delightful selection of 21 local farms all located within an hour of Asheville. Whether you’re a seasoned farm enthusiast or a curious city dweller, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. You’ll get to experience working farms through both guided and self-guided tours. From demonstrations to hands-on activities, and even interacting with adorable farm animals, there’s no shortage of fun!
And if you’re a fan of fresh produce, you’ll be in for a treat! Many farms will have u-pick fruits and flowers, plus the chance to sample delicious local foods and drinks. To make it even better, select farms will offer Spanish-language tours, ensuring that language isn’t a barrier when it comes to enjoying this marvelous experience.
This year’s tour features farms that highlight the rich diversity of agriculture in our region. From vibrant vegetable patches to charming orchards and significant livestock farms, there’s a wide array of experiences to choose from. Among the farms participating this year, *nine* of them are newcomers to the tour, including six farms from Polk and Rutherford counties. In previous years, these farms were part of a different tour, but now, they’re opening their gates to everyone on ASAP’s Farm Tour!
The tour is organized into five geographic clusters, which will help you plan your route and make the most of your time. It’s recommended that you select anywhere from two to four farms to visit each day, spending about an hour at each. You’ll find detailed descriptions of farm offerings, along with a handy map and driving directions, available at the designated website.
Here’s a quick look at some of the farms you can expect to visit:
And these are just a few to highlight the variety you’re in for!
If you’re ready to join in, advance passes are currently on sale for just $35. That ticket gets your entire carload into all participating farms over both days, which is quite the deal! If you wait until the weekend of the tour, tickets will cost $45, pending availability, so it’s a smart idea to plan ahead.
For those eager to be part of the action, there’s also an opportunity to volunteer during the tour. By giving just one day of your time, you can enjoy the farm visits for free on another day! Interested volunteers should sign up on the event website.
The Farm Tour has themed lists to help tailor your adventure. If you’re a foodie, check out the “Tasty Tour” to sample scrumptious delights. For those keen on learning, the “Show Me How It’s Done” Tour offers demonstrations on how to grow your own food. There’s even the “Kids Tour,” filled with activities just for the little ones!
This event is supported by a range of sponsors, including local tourism boards and media outlets, all dedicated to enhancing the agricultural experience in our region. Additional funding has also come from organizations committed to supporting local farming initiatives.
The 2024 Farm Tour is gearing up to be a weekend of joy, education, and connection to our land and community. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the folks who cultivate our food. So don’t wait—grab those passes, gather your friends and family, and get ready for an unforgettable weekend in Asheville!
