Weaverville Announces First Female Police Chief, Who Speaks on Impact of Women in Policing

When Assistant Chief Somer Oberlin heard she will soon be the town of Weaverville’s new police chief, and the first ever woman in the role, she was overcome with emotions, she told the Citizen Times Feb. 16. “I was touched, overwhelmed, both excited and really nervous,” Oberlin said. “I felt honored that they were willing to put that level of trust into me, and then immediately followed by the pressure of not wanting to disappoint. All those human emotions.”
Oberlin’s Appointment
On Feb. 14, Town Manager Selena Coffey announced Oberlin’s appointment as Weaverville’s new police chief, who will take over from current Chief Ron Davis when he retires April 1. This is not the first time Oberlin, 47, will have served at the helm of the Weaverville Police Department. In 2018, Oberlin was appointed interim police chief for about two to three months before Davis was hired in the permanent role.
Impacting Change
Oberlin was compelled to get into policing after witnessing her daughter experience a criminal justice system dominated by men. This experience motivated Oberlin to bring a different perspective as a woman in a male-dominated field, which she describes as a “useful tool” in her career.
Progress and Plans
As chief, Oberlin intends to continue the progress made in the department under Davis, focusing on training, community relationships, officer growth, and sustainability efforts such as introducing electric and hybrid patrol vehicles. She acknowledges the importance of Davis’s legacy and aims to build upon the foundation he has laid within the department.

Oberlin has received recognition for her leadership and dedication, evident in her certifications and memberships in law enforcement associations. She is seen as a leader who genuinely cares for her team and the town’s residents, with a strong commitment to serving the community.
Future Chief
Once officially promoted in August, Oberlin will assume the role of police chief with an annual salary of $100,643. She looks forward to taking on the responsibilities of leading the department and continuing to make a positive impact as the first female chief in Weaverville.
