Shootings Persist in Asheville Public Housing Despite Drop in Gun Violence

Gun violence in Asheville has seen an 8% decrease compared to 2023, yet Asheville police are grappling with a spike in shooting incidents at public housing complexes.

Concern Over Public Housing Shootings

The Asheville Police Department is currently investigating three drive-by shootings in West Asheville that occurred within a span of 48 hours. APD Captain Sean Aardema expressed deep concern over the rising gun violence in low-income areas.

“The most recent incident took place on a school night, disrupting the peace and safety of the neighborhood residents,” Aardema stated.

Recent Shootings at Public Housing Complexes

The series of shootings began with an incident at the Pisgah View Apartments shortly after midnight on Sunday, followed by another at Deaverview Apartments four hours later. The streak continued on Monday evening with another shooting at Pisgah View Apartments.

Repeat Calls to Public Housing Locations

Authorities have observed a concerning trend of repeated calls for gun violence at public housing sites. Captain Aardema emphasized the importance of addressing the safety and security of these underrepresented communities experiencing a surge in violent crimes.

Law Enforcement Response

In response to the escalating gun violence, Aardema disclosed that Asheville police have taken proactive measures, including assigning task force officers to work closely with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to combat the issue.
