Man Arrested in Connection with Hillcrest Shooting and Federal Probation Violation

The lead suspect in a shooting over the weekend in the Hillcrest community of Asheville was arrested on Wednesday in Henderson County. The 23-year-old man, Juve Markie Lequan McAlpin, who was wanted for federal probation violation, allegedly shot a man in the leg on April 20 on Atkinson Street.

McAlpin, who was out on federal probation at the time of the incident, was located and taken into custody by Henderson County Sheriff’s Office deputies. He is currently held without bond in the Henderson County Detention Facility.

McAlpin faces several charges from the Asheville Police Department, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting into occupied property, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Additionally, he has been charged by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office with possession of a firearm by a felon and resist, delay, obstruct.

On April 20, APD officers responded to Mission Hospital for a report of a male with a gunshot wound. It was determined that the shooting occurred at an apartment complex on Atkinson Street. Following an extensive investigation, McAlpin was identified and charged in connection with the shooting, leading to the discovery of his federal probation violation.

McAlpin has a significant criminal history, including prior involvement in a federal case aimed at reducing gun violence in Asheville. The investigation involved collaboration between the North Carolina SBI, APD, and HCSO.
