Salvage Station Concert Venue to Close, Making Way for I-26 Connector Project

Asheville’s iconic Salvage Station concert venue will soon be closing its doors to make way for the mammoth Interstate 26 Connector project, the owners announced Thursday. The venue, located at 466 Riverside Drive, will need to vacate the property by the end of the year to facilitate the highway construction.

End of an Era for Salvage Station

Salvage Station, known for its vibrant live music events and scenic setting near the French Broad River, has been a popular destination for music lovers since it opened in 2016. With both indoor and outdoor stages, the venue has hosted a wide range of performers, from Michael Franti & Spearhead to the Beach Boys.

Impact of the I-26 Connector Project

The I-26 Connector project, which has been in discussions for decades, is now moving forward with right of way work and land acquisition. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has started the process of acquiring properties along the project route, including the location of Salvage Station.

Relocation Plans and Challenges

While Salvage Station does not own the property it occupies, the venue is in the process of negotiating relocation terms with NCDOT. The venue’s management is committed to finding a new location to continue its operations and rebuild its presence in the community. However, finding a suitable space that meets Salvage Station’s unique needs, such as ample space and a scenic riverfront setting, presents significant challenges.

Hopes for a Strong Finish

Despite the impending closure, Salvage Station remains open for business and is determined to finish its 2024 season on a high note. The venue’s management urges the community to support upcoming events and concerts, including the Beach Boys performance scheduled for June 16.

Looking Ahead

As Salvage Station prepares to bid farewell to its current location, the venue’s future remains uncertain. The transition to a new site, while challenging, presents an opportunity for Salvage Station to explore new possibilities and establish a fresh chapter in its storied history.
