Ashley Espey’s culinary career began when she was five years old. Forced to tag along with her dad to the Charlotte Street Pub during a snowstorm, she was mesmerized by his skills as an executive chef. Inspired by her father, a classically trained chef who worked at iconic eateries in Asheville, Espey decided to follow in his footsteps.
A Journey of Learning and Growth
From busing tables at the Pisgah Inn to serving at the Stable Café, Espey developed her culinary skills over the years. She worked at various restaurants, farms, and bakeries, honing her craft and expanding her knowledge. Her dedication to learning and her passion for cooking led her to the executive chef role at Appalachian Mountain Brewery (AMB) Taproom and Kitchen.
Legacy and Inspiration
Despite the loss of her father to ALS, Espey carries on his legacy through her cooking. Her menu at AMB reflects her Appalachian roots and culinary expertise, offering a range of southern classics with her own innovative twist. As one of the few female executive chefs in Mills River, Espey is breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of female chefs.
