This beloved festival, observed from September 21 to October 6, has roots in Munich, Bavaria, where thousands flock to enjoy parades, lively music, and delicious food, all washed down with frothy steins of Oktoberfest beer.

But what makes Oktoberfest special in Western North Carolina (WNC) is the way it has been embraced by the community. Whether you’re looking for an adults-only bash or a family-friendly gathering, there are numerous events planned that cater to every taste. This year, local breweries and restaurants are rolling out special seasonal dining and drink menus, showcasing traditional German fare along with plenty of cultural activities and attire.
Highland Brewing’s 3rd Annual Clawtoberfest
Kicking things off is the 3rd Annual Clawtoberfest at Highland Brewing on September 21, from noon to 10 p.m. This *free*, family-friendly event will feature the highly anticipated release of Highland’s seasonal beer lineup, including the Clawhammer (Märzen lager) and Distance Driver (Kölsch). But that’s not all! Expect some exciting festival activities, like a keg roll, a stein hoist, and a costume contest for the Best Dressed adult and group.
Local vendors will be at the Meadow Market from September 21-22, and food trucks such as El Kimchi and Mountain View BBQ will be serving up their delicious treats from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. And to set the mood, live performances will come from Lagerhosen and Hustle Souls at various times throughout the day!
Oktoberfest at AMB’s Mills River Taproom
Also on September 21, AMB’s Mills River taproom will jump into the festivities from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Here, you can indulge in new beer releases combined with German pub fare and an array of games including kids’ ax throwing! You won’t want to miss out on the delicious special menu featuring mouthwatering brats, jumbo pretzels, and apple strudels.
Throughout the event, there will also be a stein-hoisting competition at 3 p.m. — and the winner will take home a $100 AMB gift card and an engraved trophy! Musical entertainment will be provided by Andy Ferrell and Kevin Daniel, making for a delightful experience for all ages with just a suggested donation of $5 at the door.
Asheville Oktoberfest
The festivities will peak with the Asheville Oktoberfest on October 5 at Pack Square Park, running from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event hosted by the Asheville Downtown Association is set to feature over 20 breweries pouring local favorites and delightful Oktoberfest brews. Not only that, but you can devour traditional German foods from vendors like Blunt Pretzels and Big Foot Longs.
For those who love a bit of competition, the Asheville Sports and Social Club is hosting Oktoberfest games, and live music will be provided by the Lagerhosen band. General admission tickets start at $20, and premium VIP options provide early access and exclusive perks.
Festivities Galore!
Alongside these main events, you can also enjoy the Buskers Fest on October 4 in Boone, featuring local musicians and artists showcasing their talents from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The inaugural Boonetoberfest kicks off on October 5 with local businesses offering special fall menus, fun activities, and competitions.
