Celebrating Our Furry Friends: Mills River Church’s Annual Blessing of the Pets

In the charming town of Mills River, excitement is brewing as the 16th annual Blessing of the Pets service approaches! This beloved event is set to take place at 10 a.m. on October 12, right on the beautiful front lawn of Mills River Presbyterian Church. It’s a perfect time to gather with fellow pet lovers and honor our furry companions, whether they have four legs, two, or perhaps more!

Bring Your Pets!

Whether you have a playful puppy, a calm cat, a fluffy rabbit, or any other adored pet, all are welcome to join in the fun! Rev. Megan McMillan, who knows a thing or two about being a pet parent herself, will lead this heartwarming half-hour service. It promises to be a delightful celebration of both current and former pets, filled with special messages, prayers, and readings that remind us why our pets hold such a special place in our hearts.

A Moment to Remember

This year holds a special twist, allowing attendees the opportunity to remember pets who are no longer with us. As part of this touching feature, brightly painted rocks created by the church’s children will be available for pet parents to write their late friends’ names. These rocks will then be placed under a “Rainbow Bridge” during the event, symbolizing the everlasting bond we share with our pets.

After the service, these recognition rocks will find a permanent home at the Faithful Pets Memorial Park located on the church property. This peaceful spot offers a retreat for those reflecting on the joy and love that their departed pets brought into their lives. Additionally, participants will receive a commemorative pet loss keepsake to cherish the memory of their beloved companions.

Individual Blessings for Our Sidekicks

What’s more precious than a personal blessing for your furry friend? After the main service, Rev. McMillan will take the time to individually bless each pet, recognizing their role as our comforters, companions, and dear friends. All pets of all ages are encouraged to join in, making it a truly inclusive experience for families and their cherished animals.

Contribute to a Great Cause

As has become a tradition, the event will also feature a love offering known as the Dog Bowl Donation, benefiting the New Hope Program at the Blue Ridge Humane Society. Attendees are encouraged to contribute either monetary donations or canned and bagged pet food, helping support this vital non-profit organization that has been working to match people with adoptable animals for over 70 years.

During the service, Angela Prodrick, the executive director of the Blue Ridge Humane Society, will share insights and updates about their invaluable work in the community. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn about how we can all contribute to bettering the lives of animals in need.
