Asheville Community Unites in Recovery Efforts Following Devastating Storm

Community Resilience in Action

Asheville Rallies Together After Devastating Storm

Asheville is coming together in an inspiring show of strength and compassion after a devastating storm has swept through Buncombe County, leaving behind a trail of destruction that has rocked the community to its core. In the wake of this disaster, Trinity Baptist Church has stepped up to play a pivotal role in supporting those in need through its newly formed Trinity Task Force.

A Mission Born from Crisis

Led by Senior Pastor Winston Parrish, this initiative is a collaborative effort that brings together the resources of Trinity Baptist Church and Ralph Sexton Ministries, with assistance pouring in from churches across the nation. The storm has caused severe flooding and landslides, which have tragically led to lost lives and left many families in urgent need of help.

Buncombe County emergency services reached out to Pastor Parrish, requesting support to help those most affected. In response, the Trinity Task Force has quickly turned into a lifeline, sheltering over 120 rescue divers and search and rescue teams who are working tirelessly day and night.

Providing Comfort and Nourishment

The task force has set up at the 23-acre site of Trinity Baptist Church in west Asheville, welcoming teams from far and wide—including volunteers from places like Chicago, Florida, Louisiana, and Virginia. It’s remarkable to see the church transform its auditorium into a dormitory while clearing out Sunday school rooms to house these dedicated workers.

As these teams set out across the county and surrounding areas like Spruce Pine and Barnardsville to lend a helping hand, the church’s kitchen crew is hard at work preparing much-needed meals. “We want to ensure that our first responders are well-fed and energized,” says Ralph Sexton. “High-energy meals are essential for them as they navigate challenging conditions.”

In a unique response to local water shortages, the church even had to dig a 280-foot well to access spring water to keep up with the demands of this crucial service.

Innovative Rescue Efforts

Recognizing the need for rapid aid delivery, the Trinity Task Force has also set up a designated helicopter landing zone, approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This strategic development allows supplies to reach hard-hit areas quickly, with helicopters airborne to drop off essential items such as water and chainsaw fuel.

Volunteers are tirelessly working to ensure local distribution centers are stocked, allowing essential services like fire departments and community centers to operate effectively. Community members looking to reach out for aid can directly contact the church at 828-254-2187.

A Community Unified

What truly stands out about this relief effort is the overwhelming support coming from churches both near and far. “Every drop of water, every can of food has come from churches across North Carolina and beyond,” Sexton proudly shares. It’s a testament to the strength of community spirit, with even small congregations of just thirty members stepping up to collect supplies.

Pastor Sexton emphasizes this initiative is not about building a kingdom but about uniting to help those in need. “We don’t need to hire anyone. Our volunteers are dedicated and ready to serve,” he affirms.

Continued Support Needed

As recovery efforts transition into a long-term project, Trinity Baptist Church urges the community to stay engaged. “Hearts with Hands is still operating and has fed thousands in Swannanoa,” Sexton states. The church is embarking on a new mission, focusing on housing individuals who are sifting through the rubble for their loved ones.

The Trinity Task Force serves as a beacon of hope and collaboration, uniting local churches, emergency services, and volunteers rallying together to restore the community. “We believe that together we can make a difference,” Sexton reassures.
