Winter is Coming to Asheville!
Hey there, Asheville folks! It looks like we’re about to get a chilly surprise as we dive into midweek. Buckle up because the coldest air of the season is rolling in, and it’s bringing a little bit of winter with it!
What’s Happening Tonight?
So, here’s the scoop: As we cozy up tonight, expect the temperature to drop significantly. You might even feel that brisk breeze starting to creep in. Most of us will see lows dipping into the mid to upper 30s. That’s right — it’s time to bring out those warm blankets and maybe sip on some hot cocoa!
For those living up near the Tennessee state line, you might be in for a bit of snow! We’re talking about 1-3 inches of the white stuff on the highest ridgetops. So, if you live there, it might be a good idea to bust out your snow boots and enjoy the view!
Frost Advisory Alert!
Starting at 1:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the entire region will be under a Frost Advisory. If you’ve got any plants or flowers outside, you’ll want to take some precautions to protect them from that prickly frost. After all, we love our beautiful gardens and don’t want them taken out by a surprise freeze!
As Wednesday rolls around, expect a major temperature drop. Highs in Asheville will barely get to the 50s — and remember, we typically enjoy warm highs around 69 degrees this time of year. It’s definitely going to feel different! And don’t forget to layer up!
Thursday’s Freeze Watch
As if that weren’t enough, Thursday morning is set to be even chillier. We’re looking at freezing temperatures or even colder as we wake up. A Freeze Watch will be in effect from 2 a.m. until 10 a.m. across much of Western North Carolina. For folks in mountain areas like Waynesville and Brevard, this freeze is actually pretty on schedule, given that their average first freeze date is October 13th. But for those in Asheville, it’s coming nearly a week early — our typical first freeze is around October 23rd.
Warm Weather Ahead!
But hang tight! Although this sudden winter chill may feel a bit like a surprise party we didn’t sign up for, the good news is that we have a lovely warmup on the horizon. This coming weekend is looking fantastic, with highs flirting with 70 degrees on Saturday and possibly hitting 73 degrees on Sunday. So, if you’ve been missing that warm sun, it seems it’ll be making a return shortly to help us forget about the chilly days!

So, what can you do during this time? Now might be the perfect opportunity to start your fall preparations! Think about wrapping up your outdoor gardening work, cozying up indoors, or maybe starting that book you’ve been meaning to read while enjoying the crisp autumn air. Don’t forget to dress in layers — you never know when that chill might hit!
