Asheville Takes Action: Code Purple Initiative Launched for Homeless Families

As the winter chill settles in Asheville, the urgency to protect those experiencing homelessness has led to a heartwarming initiative known as Code Purple. This program aims to provide emergency shelters for families in need during the colder months, showcasing the community’s commitment to everyone’s well-being.

How Code Purple Works

The main goal of Code Purple is to streamline resources for families experiencing homelessness. In an effort to help as many people as possible, families will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If there aren’t enough available shelters, they may be offered options such as hotel stays. This flexibility aims to ensure that everyone has a warm place to sleep during the harsh winter nights.

Accessibility for All

Accessibility remains a top priority, with all Code Purple sites being fully wheelchair accessible. This means that families with mobility challenges will have the same opportunity to find shelter as those without. Asheville truly embodies the spirit of inclusiveness, and this initiative reflects that commitment.

Transportation Services

Getting to a shelter can be a challenge for some, but Asheville has thought of it all! The community paramedics and the AFD-REST (Asheville Fire Department’s Rapid Emergency Scene Team) will offer transportation services to those who can’t access bus transit. In addition, Mission Hospital has partnered with Code Purple to facilitate taxi transport for patients who are being discharged and need to reach a shelter.

Moreover, ABCCM (A Bargain Community Care Ministry) will ensure that there’s a shuttle service running to and from the transit stop nearest to Transformation Village, making it easier for families to access the care they need.

Collaboration at Its Finest

Code Purple is not just a solo effort by any single organization; it represents a beautiful collaboration between the various shelters in Asheville and Buncombe County, along with numerous organizations dedicated to helping those in need. During this program, participating shelters will offer additional beds with fewer requirements than their usual policies, making it easier for families to find a place to stay when the temperatures plummet.

Looking Towards the Future

What’s truly remarkable about Code Purple is that it’s not just about providing a temporary solution. While the immediate goal is to ensure that everyone has a warm shelter, the participating organizations will also work closely with families to connect them to long-term housing options and ongoing support. This approach emphasizes a sustainable path out of homelessness rather than just a band-aid solution.

Join the Discussion

In conclusion, Asheville’s Code Purple initiative stands as a testament to the city’s caring spirit. With its well-thought-out strategies for shelter, accessibility, transportation, and long-term solutions, the heart of Asheville continues to show that it has room for everyone, regardless of their current circumstances. Let’s come together as a community, support one another, and help ensure every family has a place to call home this winter.
