Asheville Celebrates a Furry Hero: Officer Kora Wins National Award

In the beautiful city of Asheville, North Carolina, a remarkable therapy dog is making waves beyond her local community. Officer Kora, a sweet 3-year-old Goldendoodle, has recently been recognized with a prestigious national award for her invaluable efforts in supporting both the community and first responders after the devastating Hurricane Helene.

A Special Bond

Officer Kora is no ordinary pup; she is a rescued therapy dog who joined the Asheville Police Department in 2023 after completing training at Highland Canine Training. Kora is one of just two therapy dogs in the entire Carolinas who has been certified by the U.S. Police Canine Association. This incredible achievement speaks volumes about her skills and the depth of the connection she establishes with the people around her.

A Heart of Gold

According to Senior Police Officer Debbie LeCroy, Kora’s handler, the therapy dog has become a true symbol for the community. “Kora is more than a therapy dog; she represents hope, compassion, and resilience for our community,” LeCroy proudly states. This sentiment resonates deeply, especially as North Carolina continues to rebuild and recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Supporting the Community Through Tough Times

When Hurricane Helene swept through the Western Carolinas in September, it brought significant challenges to many residents. But amid the turmoil, Kora stood tall, providing comfort and solace to those in need. Her presence at relief and recovery efforts offered a much-needed break from the stress and anxiety that often accompany such natural disasters.

Beyond her impressive accomplishments during the hurricane recovery, Kora has dedicated her work to helping first responders and crime victims. Whether she’s delivering a wagging tail in the precinct or resting a gentle head on someone’s lap, Kora’s calming effect shines through. It’s clear that she has an innate ability to ease worries and bring smiles to faces that might otherwise be filled with sorrow.

A Sight to Behold

You can often find Officer Kora patrolling the charming streets of downtown Asheville in her custom-designed cart. With dazzling blue lights and an array of colorful outfits that perfectly suit her sunny disposition, Kora is loved by many as she makes her rounds. Locals and visitors alike can’t help but smile when they spot her, embodying the spirit of connection and empathy.

A Well-Deserved Honor

Recently, Kora was awarded the prestigious 2024 First Responder Paws Therapy Dog Award, presented by FHE Health, after competing against therapy dogs from all across the nation. This honor not only recognizes her hard work but also highlights the vital role therapy dogs play in supporting communities during times of turmoil.

The Future is Bright

With her paw-sitive impact, Officer Kora continues to forge connections and bring hope to many. As she continues her work with the Asheville Police Department, it’s safe to say that this furry officer will remain a beloved figure in the community for years to come. The bond she shares with the people she serves is a heartwarming reminder of the extraordinary power of love, support, and a wagging tail.

As Asheville moves forward, guided by resilience and community spirit, one thing is clear: Officer Kora will always have a special place in the hearts of those she touches.
