ABCCM Ramps Up Efforts to Provide Cooling Systems to Most Vulnerable in Life-Threatening Heat
Asheville, N.C. – Just the first weekend into summer, extreme summer heat has arrived in the mountains, leaving many residents without adequate cooling systems. The Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) has taken steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable through its cooling assistance program.
Partnership to Assist Those in Need
Reverend Scott Rogers, the executive director of ABCCM, announced that the organization has collaborated with various agencies to provide fans and air conditioners to individuals who are unable to afford them. The initiative aims to help those facing life-threatening conditions during the sweltering weather when temperatures soar above 90 degrees.
Focusing on Critical Needs
“We’re specifically focused on those with life-threatening medical conditions, including small children and individuals without any cooling in their homes,” Rogers emphasized. ABCCM’s dedicated efforts target the elderly, individuals with chronic health issues, and those with pulmonary conditions to ensure they have a cool and safe environment during the heatwave.
Qualification and Assistance
Qualification for receiving fans and air conditioners is based on the applicant’s current income statement. Families experiencing financial hardship and struggling to make ends meet are eligible for assistance, as verified through financial documentation. Once approved, eligible individuals can collect their cooling devices from any of ABCCM’s crisis centers.
