Asheville Implements New Strategies to Combat Homelessness

Asheville Takes Big Steps in Addressing Homelessness

Asheville is stepping up its game when it comes to tackling the pressing issue of homelessness. In a significant move, the Homeless Initiative Advisory Committee (HIAC) has wrapped up its work after years of service, paving the way for a newly restructured organization aimed at improving outcomes for those experiencing homelessness in the community.

A Fresh Start with New Recommendations

Back in January 2023, Asheville received vital recommendations from the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) that have significantly influenced local initiatives. One of the standout suggestions was to rework the Asheville-Buncombe Continuum of Care (CoC) into a broader, more inclusive planning body. This new structure aims to enhance collaboration among community members and stakeholders in the homelessness response.

Under the leadership of HIAC, a Governance Work Group was formed to steer this transition. They didn’t just stop at ideas; they rolled up their sleeves and created a comprehensive governance charter, laid the groundwork for a new CoC Membership body, and facilitated the election of a new Board that would take on responsibilities previously held by HIAC.

A Growing Community Effort

Today, the CoC boasts an impressive membership of 384 individuals who are dedicated to finding solutions for homelessness. The new Board, elected in April 2024, is gearing up to complete the CoC’s first strategic plan by January 2025. Excitingly, many former HIAC members are continuing their vital work with the CoC, serving as Board members, appointees, and active participants in various committees and work groups.

Hiac’s Legacy and Transition

On July 25, 2024, HIAC members gathered and voted to recommend the formal dissolution of HIAC as an advisory committee, transitioning all its efforts to the CoC. In a show of unanimous support, the City Council approved this recommendation on November 12, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the community’s journey toward addressing homelessness.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the community members who have dedicated their time and efforts to HIAC since its inception in 2008. Special recognition is deserved for the most recent members whose vision and leadership played a crucial role in transforming the way Asheville approaches this issue. Their hard work and commitment have laid a solid foundation for future efforts.

Join the Movement

With HIAC’s work officially concluded, there’s still plenty of room for community members to remain engaged in the fight against homelessness. The new Continuum of Care provides ongoing opportunities for involvement. Membership is open and encourages everyone to participate – it’s a great chance to contribute to meaningful change!

As a member of the CoC, you can not only vote on changes to the governance charter but also take part in the elections of Board members. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to serve on various committees and work groups, ensuring your voice is heard in shaping the community response to homelessness.

A Thank You to the Community

As Asheville continues to evolve its approach to addressing homelessness, the city is deeply appreciative of the ongoing support and collaboration from all stakeholders. Together, we can continue to make strides toward ending homelessness and creating a community that offers hope and help to everyone.

It’s a new chapter for Asheville, and while the journey toward resolving homelessness may be long, every step taken is a step toward a brighter future for all.
