Cherokee Braves and McDowell Titans showcase their skills in the All-WNC girls' basketball selections.
The All-Western North Carolina girls’ basketball teams for the 2024-25 season have been announced, highlighting the achievements of the Cherokee Braves and McDowell Titans. Cherokee clinched their second consecutive 1A state championship with a dominant 84-48 win, while McDowell celebrated a historic 30-win season and made impressive playoff appearances. Both teams showcased remarkable talent, with standout performances from key players. The season continues to thrive, promising an exciting future for girls’ basketball in the region.
In a lively celebration of young talent, the All-Western North Carolina girls’ basketball teams for the 2024-25 season have been announced, giving us a proud glimpse into the bright future of the sport in the region. Two teams that have truly made their mark this season are Cherokee and McDowell, showcasing not only their exceptional skills on the court but also their impressive records and achievements.
Basking in the glory of back-to-back championships, the Cherokee Braves dominated the state tournament, clinching their second consecutive 1A state championship with an eye-popping score of 84-48 against East Bladen. With an outstanding season record of 28-2, Cherokee has become a force to reckon with in Western North Carolina.
Leading the charge for the Braves this year was the sharp-shooting junior guard who wowed fans by averaging 15 points, 3.7 steals, and 2.6 rebounds per game. What’s even more impressive is that this star player shot an impressive 52% from the field and 32% from beyond the arc, proving to be a key player in their journey to the championship.
The senior guard, known for her stellar performance, averaged 16.5 points per game, including a heart-pounding season-high of 33 points in the championship game. Recovery from a knee injury only showcased her dedication and talent as she helped guide her team to victory.
On the other hand, the McDowell Titans also made headlines this season as they achieved their first-ever 30-win record in program history. Under the seasoned coaching of McCartha, the Titans not only claimed the Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season title but also triumphed in the tournament before reaching the 4A Western Regional final—a monumental accomplishment!
The Titans showcased a well-rounded team effort with their senior guard, who made significant contributions throughout the season, averaging 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and two assists. In addition, the sophomore forward stole the spotlight by leading the team with an impressive average of 14.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, demonstrating her ability to both score and rebound effectively.
Cherokee’s sophomore forward showed her prowess in the paint by averaging 10.9 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks per game. With a remarkable shooting percentage of 53% from the field, she proved to be an integral part of Cherokee’s defensive strategy while also contributing to their scoring.
The spotlight doesn’t just stop at Cherokee and McDowell! The All-WNC selections included a myriad of talented athletes from various schools such as Ryann Hernandez from Asheville School, Chandler Lowery from Pisgah, Bailey Staton from Polk County, Addie Long from Reynolds, Liz Carpenter from Robbinsville, and Sara Larios from Asheville Christian Academy, among others. Each player has demonstrated remarkable skills and contributed to the excitement that this season has brought.
As the 2024-25 season progresses, one thing is certain: the girls’ basketball scene in Western North Carolina is thriving, filled with passionate players ready to light up the court in the years ahead!
