Animal welfare groups team up for microchip event, help lost pets get back to their owners

Local animal welfare groups in Asheville have collaborated to provide a valuable service to pet owners by organizing a free microchip event aimed at reuniting lost pets with their families. The event, held on Friday, May 10, saw Asheville Humane Society, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, and the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance joining hands to offer this essential service to the community.

Microchip Implementation

During the event, a total of 73 animals, including dogs and cats, were microchipped by the dedicated teams. These microchips serve as a vital tool in identifying the owners of lost pets by allowing for easy scanning of the chip. This technology greatly increases the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families, providing peace of mind to both owners and their beloved animals.

Increased Risks During the Season

Animal welfare advocates emphasize that this time of the year poses higher risks for pets going missing. With the arrival of warmer weather, outdoor activities increase, leading to more opportunities for pets to escape or get lost. Factors such as open windows, doors, holiday celebrations with fireworks, and general outdoor commotion make it easier for animals to wander off unnoticed.

“It’s just easier access for animals to get out and sneak away — less notice.”

Additional Safety Measures

Aside from microchipping, pet owners at the event also received collar tags featuring a QR code. This innovative feature allows anyone who finds a lost pet to scan the code with their phone. Upon scanning, the code sends a pin to the owner, enabling them to locate their missing animal promptly.

Community Support

The collaboration among Asheville’s animal welfare organizations showcases the strong community support for pet owners and their furry companions. By offering essential services free of charge, these groups demonstrate their commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring the well-being of animals in the region.

“This event not only helps in reuniting lost pets with their families but also raises awareness about the importance of microchipping and taking proactive measures to safeguard our beloved animals,” said a representative from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Future Initiatives

Asheville’s animal welfare groups plan to continue working together on similar initiatives to support pet owners and address the needs of the local animal community. By providing practical solutions and valuable resources, these organizations aim to create a safer and more compassionate environment for pets and their families throughout the year.
