Woman shot in 2nd Shooting at Artisan Apartments in 3 Weeks; Suspect Found Dead

Asheville Police Department had a heavy presence with officers seen with guns drawn Sunday night at Artisan at Biltmore Park apartments for several hours. Just before midnight, a spokesperson with APD spoke, saying officers were initially called to an apartment over a domestic dispute. They said a woman had been shot around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and when police arrived, they found her with a gunshot wound lying on the ground. She was transported to the hospital, and police said she was alive and out of surgery a time later, though her exact condition was not known.

Police Response and Suspect’s Demise

Police said after hours of surrounding the apartment with a heavy presence, they found the suspect dead inside the apartment with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the man’s next of kin had been notified, but they did not yet release his name. Earlier in the night, several residents at the Artisan shared they heard what turned out to be gunshots before seeing police arrive. One resident shared seeing blood and a woman being taken away in an ambulance.

Resident’s Account

“There’s blood all over the front, I guess where he had maybe shot her through the door or maybe opened the door and shot her and went back in,” said Dustin Wingate, who has lived at the apartment complex for three months. “But there is just a big puddle of blood and they took her down the stairs and put her in an ambulance.” Several residents also told one apartment building was evacuated.

Police Operation and Conclusion

At about 9:50 p.m., a SWAT team arrived, with the scene still very active. By 11 p.m., law enforcement still had a presence on the property, but multiple squad cars and the tactical vehicles were no longer at the site compared to the 20 or so law enforcement vehicles that were there earlier in the night. Personnel were packing up gear and leaving the property.

The Artisan is the same location where a man was fatally shot on June 16. Also, in April, a juvenile was found shot in the legs at the apartment complex.
