After months of investigation, the Asheville Police Department has arrested and charged a group of individuals believed to be behind smashing more than 100 vehicle windows in the city. Detectives first noted the group breaking into Kias and Hyundais last summer, which escalated to vehicle thefts and window smashings.
Tracking down the suspects was aided by a distinctive bumper sticker on one of the stolen KIAs. 19-year-old Taysean Green has been arrested and is facing numerous charges, including breaking and entering, larceny, and injury to personal property. Green has a history of similar charges with other agencies.
Two juveniles are also facing charges related to breaking and entering, property damage, and theft. Authorities suspect the involvement of other groups in similar crimes.
The motive behind these crimes is believed to be attention-seeking on social media. Despite no injuries in this instance, the police are concerned about the trend continuing. Green is in custody with a bond set at $260,000.
