The picturesque town of Asheville has been buzzing with excitement as it ushers in a fresh chapter at The N.C. Arboretum. This past August, Drake Fowler officially stepped into his role as executive director after a commendable tenure as the organization’s chief financial officer and deputy director. His arrival, however, didn’t come without its challenges.
Just as Fowler was getting settled, the unexpected hit when Hurricane Helene swept through the region, leaving significant damage in its wake. “I did not expect to be faced with over 10,000 trees down on our property within the first 60 days of my tenure,” he shared with a sigh of disbelief. But rather than being deterred, Fowler saw this challenge as an opportunity.
“While the storm has upended almost every part of our organization, our focus has not changed. We’ve only seen the need for a peaceful connection with nature increase during this crisis,” he explained. As a landscape architect, Fowler is deeply rooted in the belief that connecting with nature is essential to our well-being. He emphasized that the Southern Appalachian mountains are among North Carolina’s most treasured assets.
Thanks to the hard work of the dedicated staff and support from various outside organizations, The N.C. Arboretum was able to reopen parts of its grounds to visitors. Fowler noted how positively the community responded, saying, “Guests have come here to be out in nature.” He sees the arboretum as playing a key role in supporting the region’s economic, environmental, and public health recovery.
Before all the chaos with the hurricane, one of the highlights of Fowler’s year was honoring the legacy of the arboretum’s founding executive director, George Briggs. “George served us for 37 years and, as my mentor for the past 20 years, taught me how to lead with compassion and integrity,” he fondly recalled. It was a heartfelt farewell that took place months before Helene wreaked havoc in the region.
As Fowler reflects on his early experiences as executive director, several moments stand out. A particularly powerful memory for him was the board meeting held just two weeks after the storm. “Our board came from out of town or from their homes without power and water. In that meeting, there was not a dry eye,” he recounted. Their unwavering support during such a tough time truly touched him.
Fowler also had the unique opportunity to host the UNC System president, Peter Hans, for his inaugural visit. “We toured the property and met with staff while I drove him around in a side-by-side ATV vehicle,” he narrated, emphasizing the warmth and compassion that the visit brought, despite navigating rough terrain.
Fowler is grateful for the support the arboretum has received during these challenging times. “Both Chancellors of nearby universities reached out to help me as a new leader, sending much-needed support,” he said. “Our staff has been working seven days a week to get the property back online and to ensure that our signature event, Winter Lights, can shine brightly for the community.”
He feels incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such amazing leaders, staff, and supporters. “I will never forget the role that everyone has played in my first 60 days as executive director of The N.C. Arboretum,” he concluded.
As you can see, the future of The N.C. Arboretum is not just about plants and trees; it’s about community, resilience, and finding beauty even in the face of adversity. With Fowler’s leadership, the arboretum is set to continue its vital role as a cherished sanctuary for both locals and visitors.
