Asheville’s Nutcracker Shines Again After Adversity
Asheville is buzzing with excitement as the Asheville Ballet’s Nutcracker returns to the stage this year. But this isn’t just any performance; it’s a beautiful reminder of the power of community and resilience. After facing the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the ballet company is prepared to enchant audiences once more with Clara’s magical journey to the Land of Sweets.
A Community Rebuilds Together
The impact of the hurricane was nothing short of catastrophic. The ballet’s studio suffered extensive damage, leaving many worried about the future of their beloved Nutcracker. Ann Dunn, the Artistic Director, shares, “I would not be having a Nutcracker if it weren’t for community support and the GoFundMe.” Unfortunately, the company’s special $50,000 suspended wood floor was destroyed, along with countless props and sets that were essential for the performance.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, the community stepped up in a big way. From offering rehearsal spaces to volunteering their time and talents, the residents of Asheville have shown incredible support. “It has been incredible,” Dunn noted. This collective effort has made it possible for over 100 dancers to audition for roles, leading to a staggering cast of 106 performers stepping into more than 200 roles.
The first run-through of the show was a monumental moment for everyone involved. It marked a cathartic milestone after many months of hard work and dedication, culminating in a production that truly embodies the spirit of perseverance.
New Choreography Enhances the Classic Tale
In addition to overcoming the obstacles of the past year, this year’s Nutcracker features new choreography that breathes fresh life into the traditional story. One of the standout changes includes a new scene at the beginning of the ballet where Drosselmeyer is introduced in his workshop, setting the stage for Clara’s adventure in a way that hasn’t been seen before.
As the ballet progresses, Dunn has also emphasized “the lyrical, romantic elements of the grand pas de deux between the Cavalier and the Sugar Plum Fairy.” This approach aims to engage not just the seasoned ballet aficionados but also those who may be experiencing the magic of ballet for the first time.
The return of Marcelo Martinez as the Cavalier is another highlight for this season. His partnership with Megan Jones Medford’s Sugar Plum Fairy promises to be a captivating spectacle that audiences will not soon forget.
A Magical Experience for All Ages
When it comes to the Nutcracker, it’s more than just a performance; it’s an enchanting experience that resonates with people of all ages. This year, Dunn expressed her excitement for the children’s show particularly, noting that many young attendees have faced hardships due to the hurricane. “To be able to go to the theater will be a really special experience for them,” she expressed, recognizing the importance of offering a moment of escape.
The production invites everyone to step away from their daily lives and immerse themselves in a world filled with magic and beauty. Asheville Ballet has been a staple of the local arts community since 1963, touching the lives of approximately 23,000 people each season with performances and educational outreach. Despite challenges, the company remains dedicated to nurturing talent and promoting an appreciation for dance.
This year’s Nutcracker stands as a testament to community spirit and artistic dedication in a year marked by adversity. Audiences can anticipate a performance that not only honors the cherished tradition of the ballet but also embraces innovation and collaboration.
