Feasibility Study on Potential Merger Between Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools

There’s a major topic at the heart of public discussion in Asheville and Buncombe County these days – the potential merger of Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools. Last year, the NC General Assembly mandated that a study be conducted to explore the feasibility of the merger.

About the Study

Prismatic Services, an educational consulting company, has taken up the mantle of exploring this initiative. In fact, they are already deep into the process of collecting data to inform the study, which they plan to finalize by December 2024. The final report is scheduled for presentation to the State Legislature in early 2025.

The September Sessions

In order to gather comprehensive feedback from the locals, irrespective of their affiliations, Prismatic Services has organized a series of community meetings; the first of which will begin on Monday, September 9. These meetings will serve as a platform for residents to express their thoughts and provide feedback on the concept of merging these two distinguished school systems.

Moreover, an online survey will develop in parallel with these meetings for people who prefer to provide their inputs in that medium. By taking this dual approach, the consulting firm is ensuring maximum participation from the community.

Scope and Impact

The implications of such a merger are myriad and could fundamentally change the education landscape of the region. The aim of these sessions is not just to collect reactions but also to inform the public about potential benefits and challenges that might associate with this major decision.

A Timescale of the Events

Following these discussions, Prismatic Services plans to complete its report by December this year. This comprehensive report, significantly influenced by local feedback, will be presented to the State Legislature in February 2025.

Participation from the Community

Community engagement has always played a vital part in the development of the city. This time is no exception. The on-ground sessions and the online survey provide residents of Asheville and Buncombe County an opportunity to express their ideas, hopes, concerns, and questions about this proposed merger.

Plan ahead for Future

With eyes set firmly on the future, the city and the county have shown their commitment to consolidating resources to provide the best possible education for young citizens. Whether or not this merger takes place, it’s clear that the input of the community will take a central role in steering the ships of these school systems towards the future.
