Asheville City Schools surprises its Teacher of the Year

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (HERE NEWS) — Asheville City Schools had quite a surprise for one of its middle school teachers on Wednesday. Kelli Madkins, who teaches 8th grade English Language Arts at Asheville Middle School, was honored as the ACS Teacher of the Year.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Madkins expressed her gratitude and excitement about receiving the prestigious award, stating, “I was in the same category with some fabulous teachers. We have fantastic educators in this district, and I just feel really proud to be representing us.”

A Celebratory Gathering

Administrators and students gathered to congratulate Madkins on her achievement. AMS Principal Jo Landreth and Superintendent Dr. Maggie Fehrman were present to bestow the honor upon Madkins. Dr. Fehrman commended Madkins for her dedication and passion in the classroom, likening her teaching to an artist painting a beautiful portrait.

A Teacher Who Goes Above and Beyond

Madkins, known for challenging her students and holding them to high expectations, shared her thoughts on the recognition, saying, “It means a lot. I really try to give my best. My students push me to rise to the challenge, and I do the same. To be honored in this capacity is just fantastic.”

Dr. Fehrman hinted at the possibility of Madkins being a finalist for North Carolina Teacher of the Year, citing her outstanding work in the classroom as a strong contender for the statewide recognition.
