Amid Trump Assassination Attempt, Political Division, Asheville’s Clergy Call for Healing

ASHEVILLE – In the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13, many of Asheville’s faith leaders during Sunday services called for a moment of healing and “prayer for our nation.”

Healing Through Love and Respect

Finding comfort in times of unease and violence calls for more than a condemnation of violence, it requires that we love one another. “We have to love each other,” mentioned Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church Rev. Douglas Bynum, addressing the need for respect and love amid political division.

Bynum acknowledged past acts of radical political violence within their denomination, such as the 2015 Charleston church shooting, emphasizing the need for healing in the face of current events.

Rejecting Political Violence

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville’s Rev. Audette Fulson emphasized the rejection of political violence and the importance of love in uniting communities in the face of divisive incidents, like the recent shooting during a rally.

Calls for Healing and Reconciliation

First Baptist Church of Asheville’s Pastor Mack Dennis underscored the importance of healing and reconciliation in light of recent political violence, emphasizing the need to reject retribution or revenge.

Pastor Clayton King of Biltmore Baptist Church urged for unity and peace during challenging times, praying for God’s intervention to bring about reconciliation and harmony in the nation.

Recent Instances of Political Violence

Recent instances of political violence and extreme rhetoric in the U.S., including the Capitol insurrection and attacks on public figures, have raised concerns about the escalating tensions.

Condemnation and Calls for Unity

The assassination attempt on Trump drew bipartisan condemnation, with President Biden urging a step back from divisive rhetoric and emphasizing the need for non-violent solutions.

Seeking Love in Times of Violence

Grace Episcopal Church’s Rev. Milly Morrow highlighted the importance of love over fear in addressing ongoing violence, expressing faith in the power of love to overcome adversity.
