Chilly Times Ahead in Asheville and Buncombe County
As the weather takes a frigid turn, the city of Asheville and Buncombe County have declared a Code Purple. This important designation is set to provide emergency shelter for those experiencing homelessness as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing. This Code Purple alert is currently in effect until Sunday, January 5, and is meant to keep our most vulnerable neighbors safe and warm during what promises to be a bitterly cold week.
ABCCM Steps Up to the Plate
The Asheville Buncombe Christian Community Ministry (ABCCM) is taking the reins by coordinating all operations related to the Code Purple designation. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone has a safe place to sleep and can enjoy some free hot meals. The men’s shelter can be found at 20 20th Street, Asheville, while women and children can find refuge at the Transformation Village, located at 30 Olin Haven Way in Asheville.
Need Help? Here’s What You Should Do
If you or someone you know has recently lost stable housing because of the cold, it’s crucial to act quickly. Those in need can contact FEMA for assistance through the Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program, which can help provide lodging in hotels or motels. The good news is the deadline for applying for FEMA assistance related to Hurricane Helene has been extended to February 6, 2025. Don’t let the time pass you by!
What to Expect Weather-Wise
Traveling to the Shelters Made Easy
For those needing a lift to one of the Code Purple sites, worry not! The Asheville Area Rapid Transit (ART) is providing free bus rides to ensure everyone can get to safety without any hassle. Just give a heads up to the bus driver about your destination, and they’ll help get you there. Additionally, there will be shuttles operating from the Crisis Ministry located at 24 Cumberland Ave., taking passengers to ABCCM at 4 p.m.
Important Information about Previous Shelters
It’s important to note that ABCCM previously housed men at the Veterans Restoration Quarters. Unfortunately, this facility is no longer operational due to damages stemming from Hurricane Helene. But don’t worry; ABCCM is committed to providing a warm shelter for those in need during these cold times.
