News Summary
Asheville is launching the Code Purple initiative to provide emergency shelter for the homeless as winter temperatures drop. Starting December 1, local shelters will open up additional beds and relax entry requirements. The program is a collaborative effort between shelters and community organizations to ensure that everyone has a safe, warm place during freezing conditions. Accessibility and transportation services are also included, aiming to make the process as smooth as possible for those in need.
Asheville Takes Action to Protect the Homeless from Winter Chill!
The lovely city of Asheville is stepping up its game as winter temperatures take a nosedive! With forecasts predicting below-freezing conditions, the Asheville Homeless Coalition has kicked off an initiative known as Code Purple. This program is set to go into effect starting Sunday, December 1, and it promises to help those in our community who find themselves without shelter during these harsh weather conditions.
What is Code Purple?
So, what exactly is Code Purple? Well, it’s a fantastic effort aimed at coordinating emergency overflow shelters for the homeless here in Asheville, as well as in beautiful Buncombe County. The program works hand-in-hand with local shelters and other aiding organizations to ensure everyone has a warm place to stay during those bitterly cold nights.
During this period, participating shelters will be opening their doors wider than usual! That means more available beds and a more relaxed approach to the typical entry requirements. It’s all about making sure that everyone who needs help can get it. Not only that, but the facilities under this program will also assist individuals in being referred to ongoing shelter and housing options, helping pave the way for a more stable situation in the future.
Where to Find Shelter?
If you’re in need of shelter, here are two key locations you should keep in mind:
- Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM): This site will specifically accommodate single men at 20 20th Street.
- Transformation Village: This warm haven will cater to single women and women with children, located at 30 Olin Haven Way.
What’s even more encouraging is that all Code Purple facilities are handicap accessible, ensuring that everyone in our community can find safety from the cold. If there are specific accessibility needs, discussions can be held before referrals to made to ensure everyone’s comfort is prioritized.
Getting There Made Easy
No one should have to brave the cold just to find shelter, and fortunately, transportation services are being provided too! Community Paramedics and the Asheville Fire Department’s REST program are stepping up to offer transportation for those who are unable to use bus services. Additionally, Mission Hospital is facilitating taxi service to the Code Purple sites for patients who are being discharged. What a relief!
ABCCM is also providing a shuttle service to and from Transformation Village at stop 877, located at the Asheville Outlet Mall. And for those who rely on public transport, free bus transit through the Asheville Redefines Transit (ART) system will be available at night to take individuals to the shelters, and back downtown the next morning. Just a small reminder: riders must let the driver know they are getting the free service!
During the weekdays, morning return trips to the Coxe Ave terminal can be taken from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and on weekends, the service runs from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. It’s so reassuring to know that help is within reach!
A Community Effort
Need Help? There’s Support!
If you or someone you know needs assistance, a Code Purple hotline for facilities and general information is available at 828-398-6011. With the community coming together like this, those facing homelessness have a fighting chance to find warmth and support during this freezing season.
Let’s all do our part to spread the word and ensure every individual in Asheville has the opportunity to stay safe and warm this winter!
