Asheville Activates Code Purple for Emergency Shelter Amid Bitter Chill
The beautiful city of Asheville is stepping up to provide much-needed warmth and shelter for its homeless population as an emergency response to the extreme cold weather. Starting from Monday, January 27, 2025, the Asheville Homeless Coalition has initiated a Code Purple to ensure that everyone has access to shelter during this harsh winter season.
What is Code Purple?
In simple terms, Code Purple serves as a coordinated effort to provide overflow emergency shelter for those experiencing homelessness in Asheville and Buncombe County. With temperatures dipping dangerously low, this initiative is all about ensuring safety and survival for vulnerable individuals in our community.
More Beds, Less Hassle
During the Code Purple period, participating shelters will be offering more beds than usual and will operate with fewer requirements than what’s typically expected in their regular programming. This means more people will have a warm place to stay without the usual barriers when it comes to shelter access. These shelters will also help participants find ongoing shelter and housing options for the future.
Getting There—No One Left Behind
Transportation is a crucial aspect of this initiative. Community Paramedics and the Asheville Fire Department’s REST team are available to provide transportation for those who are unable to access bus transit. Additionally, Mission Hospital is pitching in by offering taxi rides to Code Purple sites for individuals being discharged from the hospital.
The Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) is also doing its part by facilitating a shuttle service to and from Transformation Village, conveniently located at Asheville Outlet Mall, stop 877. If you’re wondering about where to stay, ABCCM has accommodation facilities for both single men and women, as well as for women with children.
Free Transit Access
If you’re relying on public transportation, don’t worry! The ART (Asheville Redefines Transit) is providing free bus transit to all Code Purple sites at night and back to downtown the next morning. All riders need to do is inform the bus driver of their need for free transit related to the Code Purple program. Transportation back to the Coxe Avenue terminal will also be available during specific hours both on weekdays and weekends.
A Lifeline in Frigid Conditions
In light of the rough weather conditions, the aim of Code Purple is crystal clear: to protect those who are at risk from the harsh cold. As part of the initiative, purple lights will illuminate significant buildings throughout the city as a visual reminder to the community about the available resources through Code Purple.
