Asheville Launches Code Purple Initiative to Support Homeless During Winter Months

Asheville Initiates Code Purple to Aid the Homeless

Asheville is stepping up its efforts to provide warmth and shelter to those in need with the launch of Code Purple, a community initiative aimed at offering emergency overflow shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness. With the winter months approaching, the Asheville-Buncombe Homeless Coalition Steering Committee has come together to ensure that no one has to face the frigid temperatures without a roof over their head.

What is Code Purple?

Code Purple is all about coordination and collaboration. It brings together various shelters and organizations across Asheville and Buncombe County to provide additional beds and services for individuals in need. During this period, participating shelters will offer more beds with fewer requirements than what is usually required. This is a perfect opportunity for those who may not have met typical shelter criteria to find a safe place to stay.

Additionally, Code Purple aims to connect participants with ongoing shelter and housing options, acting as a bridge to more permanent solutions. For families, the process will be handled on a case-by-case basis, with hotel options available if no other shelters can accommodate them.

Accessibility and Transportation

The initiative emphasizes accessibility—both for the shelter sites and transportation options. All Code Purple locations are wheelchair accessible, ensuring that everyone in need can receive assistance without barriers. Asheville’s public transportation system, ART, has also partnered in this effort; during Code Purple nights, bus rides to and from the shelters will be free.

Here’s how it works: Riders can take advantage of free transit starting at 3:20 PM until 8:00 PM, which coincides with the nightly shelter intake. The next morning, free rides back to the Coxe Ave terminal will be available from 6 AM to 9:30 AM on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 8 AM to 10:45 AM on Sundays. This setup ensures that transportation is seamless, providing access without additional stress.

Important Notes for Riders

Additional Support Services

Moreover, community paramedics, along with the Asheville Fire Department’s REST team, are on hand to provide transportation support for those who cannot access bus transit. In case someone is being discharged from Mission Hospital, arrangements for taxi services to Code Purple sites can be made, adding another layer of assistance for those in transition.

For families using the shuttle service, ABCCM is facilitating transportation between Transformation Village and the Asheville Outlet Mall, making it easier than ever for families to get to where they need to go.
