Asheville City Council and other community leaders are on edge following a series of vandalism incidents targeting committee members in the city.
According to Asheville police, two steering committee members had their vehicles vandalized in the past few weeks. The incidents occurred just before and after the city council approved a Business Improvement District.
In one instance, the words “No BID” were spray-painted on a car, along with the anarchy symbol, clearly indicating a message of dissent towards the newly approved Business Improvement District. The second case involved spray-painted graffiti and slashed tires, with the message “eat ****” using the anarchy symbol in place of a letter.
Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer expressed her concern over the targeted acts of vandalism, highlighting the impact it has had on members of the community involved in decision-making processes.
Political science professor Chris Cooper from Western Carolina University stated that these acts of vandalism serve as a means to send a political message, drawing attention to the underlying issues and tensions within the community.
Asheville police are actively investigating both instances of targeted vandalism on committee members’ vehicles. They urge the public to come forward with any information that may help in identifying the culprits.
If you have any information related to these incidents, you can reach out to Asheville police at 828-252-1110. Anonymous tips can also be submitted using the TIP2APD smartphone application or by texting TIP2APD to 847411.
As developments unfold in the investigation, the community remains vigilant in addressing safety concerns and upholding the values of civil discourse and community engagement.
