Asheville Shines as Community Leaders are Honored

The picturesque city of Asheville recently played host to a heartwarming celebration of community spirit at the second annual People of Action Gala, organized by the Rotary Club of Asheville. This lively gathering was held at the Renaissance Hotel, where local leaders and community advocates were recognized for their steadfast commitment to the values of service and selflessness.

A Celebration of Heroes

At the Gala, guests experienced a joyful atmosphere filled with great food, music, and the sweet taste of desserts prepared by talented local chefs. The night brought together individuals who embody the Rotary mission of “service above self,” celebrating the outstanding contributions of local heroes in categories that truly matter to the community.

Recognizing Impactful Contributions

This year, honorees were celebrated in seven crucial areas of community impact. In the field of Peace-Building and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Oralene Simmons was acknowledged for founding the MLK Prayer Breakfast in Asheville, an event that has grown over the years to welcome more than 1,000 attendees each year since its inception in 1982.

When it comes to Disease Prevention and Treatment, Dr. Shannon Dowler was recognized for her incredible work as a family physician and a leader in public health. Her efforts in STD education and leading the transition of North Carolina Medicaid to managed care have been pivotal to the wellbeing of the community.

The Asheville Water Resources Department took home an award for their effective response in restoring clean drinking water following the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene, with the award accepted by the dedicated Water Resources Director, David Melton.

For Maternal and Child Health, Dr. Amy Marietta was celebrated for her profound impact through MAHEC’s Project CARA, a program dedicated to improving birth outcomes and reducing infant mortality among women struggling with substance use disorders.

On the educational front, Marta Alcalá, the Executive Director of Equity for Asheville City Schools, has tirelessly promoted literacy and educational equality for over 33 years, earning her recognition in Basic Education and Literacy.

In the realm of Economic and Community Development, Jeffrey Kaplan was honored for his efforts to create high-growth jobs in the area, successfully raising $1 million in economic recovery funds to support local businesses.

Lastly, Lang Hornthal, co-executive director of EcoForesters, made waves in the field of Supporting the Environment. His leadership has resulted in the restoration and conservation of over 100,000 acres of Appalachian forests, showcasing an essential commitment to protect our natural resources.

Supporting Local and Global Causes

The event was about more than just recognition; it also served as a fundraiser to support the Rotary Club of Asheville Foundation. The proceeds from this delightful gala will go towards various local initiatives, including scholarships for students, recognizing local teachers and first responders, and protecting the French Broad watershed. Additionally, the foundation supports humanitarian projects in places like Guatemala, Honduras, and Argentina, showcasing a commitment to both local needs and global missions.

With over 165 engaged members, the Rotary Club of Asheville continues to make waves through local, national, and international service projects. The evening’s celebrations not only honored the contributions of remarkable individuals but also reinforced the idea that together, the community can achieve tremendous things.

The Rotary’s President expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to honor the heroes whose actions have left a positive mark on the community, reminding everyone that service, kindness, and dedication truly make Asheville a wonderful place to call home.
