Asheville, a beacon of beauty nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is slowly but surely picking itself up after the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. The aftermath of the storm has certainly taken a toll on our community, and the recovery process is in full swing. But amidst the chaos, there’s a renewed strength and spirit that binds us together as we start to rebuild.
While our downtown area, lodging options, and much of our hospitality infrastructure have weathered the storm relatively well, other regions are still grappling with the effects of the flood. Many residents are currently without power or water, and the first stages of recovery are ongoing across various parts of our beloved Asheville.
On a brighter note, the Asheville Regional Airport is open and welcoming travelers again, while crucial highways such as I-40 East and I-26 have resumed their regular operations. This opens up pathways for support and assistance to flow into the affected areas, which is crucial for our ongoing recovery efforts.
A big shoutout is due for the amazing first responders who have come together from across the country to help those impacted by the hurricane. Their hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, and right now, we’re focused on making sure our residents and workers are well taken care of. The emotional and economic strain from this disaster is substantial, and it’s heartwarming to see so many individuals step in to lend a helping hand.
It’s no secret that people are drawn to Asheville and the enchanting mountains of Western North Carolina. If you’re looking for ways to support our community, we truly appreciate any assistance you can provide, not only in this immediate phase of recovery but with an eye towards the months and years ahead.
For those who wish to pitch in, consider donating to local recovery efforts that are springing into action. Organizations such as The Salvation Army of Asheville, MANNA FoodBank, and the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County are doing incredible work to support our community. If you have items to donate in bulk, feel free to email helenedonations@buncombecounty.org, and if you’re looking to volunteer, please reach out by emailing helenevolunteers@buncombecounty.org.
Additionally, as of September 29, FEMA has announced that federal disaster assistance is available for the state of North Carolina, including Buncombe County. This will provide much-needed support, including grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans to assist individuals and business owners affected by the disaster.
We know that recovery will take time, and progress may seem slow. But every little effort counts, and we’re starting to see the community pull together. While travel may be limited right now, we want you to keep Asheville in your heart. When the time is right, rest assured that we will welcome you back with open arms, ready to share our gorgeous surroundings and rich culture once again.
In the meantime, thank you for your love, support, and patience as we navigate this challenging journey. We know with every ounce of community spirit, determination, and kindness, we will emerge stronger on the other side.
Always, Asheville.
