Asheville Community Rallies Together After Hurricane Helene’s Fury

As the sun finally shines again on Asheville, the community is coming together to reflect on the unexpected impact of Hurricane Helene, which swept through the area on September 27. While the storm brought chaos—downed trees, flooded creeks, and some structural damage—the true resilience of this vibrant community is shining through the aftermath.

A Safe Harbor Amidst the Storm

Givens Estates, a continuing care retirement community, remains a beacon of hope. Fortunately, most of the homes, apartments, and common areas have emerged from the storm relatively unscathed, with just one exception noted. Many residents chose to stay on campus during the hurricane, providing a sense of community and support that is truly heartwarming in times of difficulty. Even though there is currently no running water or television service—a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things—they have maintained access to electricity and internet communication.

Leaders and Staff Stepping Up

One of the most remarkable stories to emerge from the storm is that of the leadership and staff at Givens Estates. Executive Director Kirsten Cone has been a source of comfort for residents, communicating not only in person but also through social media, ensuring everyone is kept up to date. The leadership team has gone above and beyond to coordinate services during this challenging period. Their dedication can be seen as they arranged for takeout meals, maintained grounds, and provided health services, effectively managing the needs of residents while also looking after their staff.

And speaking of staff, they truly are the unsung heroes of this story. Many have been personally affected by the hurricane, with some dealing with seriously damaged homes and vehicles. Yet, those who can have chosen to remain on campus, tirelessly working to ensure senior residents feel comfortable and supported in these tough times. Their positivity and determination to serve others during such a challenging moment is nothing short of inspiring.

A Community Supporting Its Own

The spirit of community is alive and well at Givens Estates, as initiatives have sprung up to support the staff members who are dealing with their own hardships. The community has set up a ‘G-Mart’, a designated space where residents can donate food, clothing, and household items to help staff members in need. This collaboration underlines a mutual appreciation that flows seamlessly through the community.

Additionally, to assist staff members who are juggling childcare and work responsibilities, a daycare area has been created. This thoughtful provision allows employees to bring their children to work, ensuring they can focus on serving the residents knowing their little ones are nearby and taken care of.

Emergency Services Rallying to the Cause

Community spirit has also attracted outside assistance, with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) now present on campus, providing drinking water for all residents. Meanwhile, the globally recognized organization Samaritan’s Purse is also lending a hand by distributing water suitable for chores like washing dishes.

Gratitude Abounds

As this Asheville community continues to rebuild, one sentiment rings true: the profound appreciation for the staff. Residents have expressed their gratitude countless times, acknowledging the hard work and love that goes into maintaining a warm, supportive environment. To the staff who are managing not only their own lives but also ensuring the comfort of others, the community’s love and admiration are palpable.

While the clean-up continues and the recovery process is underway, it’s the stories of resilience, teamwork, and unyielding spirit that will be remembered long after the storm has passed. In the face of adversity, the heart of Asheville shines brighter than ever!
