Asheville Community Update: Important Announcements and Resources
As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s that time of year when our lovely Asheville community comes together to celebrate, give thanks, and also lend a helping hand where we can. As we prepare for the holiday festivities this week, there are a few important updates and resources to share that will ensure everyone stays informed and connected.
Holiday Closures for Community Care Stations
First off, for those seeking assistance, it’s important to know that all Community Care Stations and water distribution sites will be closed on Thursday, November 28, in observance of the holiday. However, fear not—these vital resources will resume operations on Friday, November 29. It’s always good to check ahead to plan your visit!
Ongoing Support Until December 2
As we look slightly ahead, remember that at the end of the day on Monday, December 2, certain water distribution sites and care stations will close for the season. The exceptions to this closure include:
- Morgan Hill Baptist Church at 594 Barnardsville Highway
- Bethel United Methodist at 1050 Riceville Road
- Owen Pool located at 117 Stone Drive, Swannanoa
- Fairview Ingles at 225 Charlotte Highway by Reynolds High
Parking and Transportation Updates
In addition to these community resources, there are updates coming along for parking enforcement and public transport. Starting again on December 2, 2024, all on-street parking meters will be active once more, along with event parking fees at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center garage for events held on or after that date. Be sure to plan accordingly!
If you rely on ART (Asheville Redefines Transit) bus service, please note that fares will also return starting January 2, 2025. So make sure your budget includes these little changes as you plan your commutes in the coming months.
Support for Hurricane Helene Recovery
Next, for those who have been affected by Hurricane Helene and face challenges regarding debris removal, relief is available. Buncombe County property owners lacking debris removal insurance have access to the Private Property Debris Removal (PPDR) program. This program is designed to help clear eligible disaster debris from private properties and even covers demolition of unsafe structures.
You can apply for this service at several locations, including:
- Asheville Mall (3 South Tunnel Road) – open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Barnardsville Fire Department (Station 15, 100 Dillingham Road) – Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Swannanoa Fire Rescue (510 Bee Tree Road) – Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Fairview Library (1 Taylor Road) – Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Assistance from Eblen Charities
Additionally, Eblen Charities is available to extend a helping hand to families in distress. Their support includes services for housing ( rent and mortgage), utilities, transportation (like gasoline for medical appointments), education, medical needs, and even holiday gifts!
If you’re in need of assistance, check out their programs either online or by giving them a call. There’s no shame in asking for help, and that’s what our community is here for.
FEMA Funding for Repairs
Lastly, those who might need financial assistance for repair works, you’ll be glad to know that FEMA offers funding for the repairs of private roads and bridges—this applies even if your home wasn’t damaged! You can easily reach out to FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA for more information.
