The floodwaters were relentless, reaching high levels that it completely inundated the first floor, nearly filling up to the ceiling. This devastation forced the restaurant to close its doors temporarily and make the tough decision of laying off all 115 employees, contributing to an emotional rollercoaster for the entire staff and community.

In the aftermath, Westmoreland shared that the first floor needs an extensive renovation—it must be entirely gutted due to the water damage. The rebuilding process is projected to take around four to six months, putting the target reopening at Memorial Day, with a possibility of delay into early June depending on the rebuilding progress.

Financial Impacts and Community Responses

The situation has not only affected the restaurant, but it has also rippled through the community, causing a significant dent in tourism, especially at a time when visitors flock to Asheville for the fall colors. In addition to this, Corner Kitchen previously experienced flooding in 2004 and received government assistance at that time, leading them to apply again for help this go-around.
