Asheville Sets to Open Disaster Recovery Center Amid Tropical Storm Helene Recovery Efforts

Asheville Prepares for Disaster Recovery Center Opening

Asheville is bustling with anticipation as the community gears up for the opening of a new Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) on Saturday, November 9. This center will play a vital role in supporting those affected by the recent impacts of Tropical Storm Helene in North Carolina.

Location and Accessibility

The DRC will be situated in the heart of Asheville at the Asheville Mall, specifically in the former Gap store. The exact address is:

3 S. Tunnel Road
Asheville, NC 28805

For the convenience of the locals, the center will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. As a friendly reminder, if you were looking to visit the previous center at Cane Creek Pool, it will be closing its doors on November 8 as staffers transition over to the new facility.

What to Expect at the DRC

A DRC serves as a one-stop shop where disaster survivors can connect face-to-face with FEMA representatives. Here, you can take care of several crucial tasks:

  • Apply for FEMA assistance
  • Get referrals to local support in your area
  • Discuss options for low-interest disaster loans with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)
  • Access information on financial aid that may cover home repairs, personal property losses, and other essential disaster-related needs

FEMA assistance may also extend to cover childcare, transportation issues, medical needs, and even funeral or dental expenses. This broad spectrum of aid ensures that community members can find the help they need during these challenging times.

Who Can Visit the DRC?

The center is open to homeowners and renters from 39 North Carolina counties, as well as tribal members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Anyone within these groups is welcome to visit any of the operational centers, even if they are located in neighboring states. The best part? You do not need to make an appointment!

How to Apply for Assistance

While visiting the DRC is highly encouraged for a personal touch, it’s worth noting that it is not the only way to access FEMA assistance. Many folks find it faster to apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or through the FEMA App. If you prefer to speak with someone directly, you can call 800-621-3362 for assistance. For those using relay services, don’t forget to share your specific service number with FEMA.

Making the Most of Your Visit

As you prepare for your visit to the DRC, remember that the center is fully accessible for individuals with disabilities or access and functional needs. The staff is dedicated to making sure everyone can navigate the recovery process smoothly.

Stay Informed

It’s essential to keep yourself updated on any changes or additional resources available in the area. For those interested in finding additional DRC locations, you can visit fema.gov/drc or simply text “DRC” followed by your ZIP code to 43362.

A Community Coming Together

As we move forward, the opening of this Disaster Recovery Center represents a significant step for Asheville and its surrounding communities. It’s a place of hope and help where residents can come together to rebuild and recover. So mark your calendars, spread the word, and let’s show our resilience as we support one another during this time.
