An Asheville man, Deveon Ambrose Chambers, 25, has been sentenced to at least 7.5 years in jail for drug trafficking, following a recent court ruling.
Chambers pleaded guilty to three counts of felony trafficking in opium/heroin, felony flee to elude, felony possession of a controlled substance on jail premises, and a misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired. As per the decision by visiting Judge Joseph Crosswhite, Chambers is set to serve an active term of 90-120 months (7.5-10 years) in the custody of the Department of Adult Corrections in Raleigh. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay a $100,000 fine.
In June 2021, the Asheville Police Department stopped Chambers’ vehicle for a fictitious tag. During the encounter, Chambers reportedly resisted commands and exhibited erratic behavior, leading officers to apprehend him. Subsequently, law enforcement discovered Chambers attempting to conceal a small baggie by dropping and kicking it under the vehicle. Items found in the vehicle and nearby included 30.46 grams of fentanyl, 23.81 grams of marijuana, $2,062.97 in cash, and a scale with white residue.
The sentence handed down to Chambers highlights the severity with which drug trafficking offenses are treated by the justice system. The combination of felonies and misdemeanors he pleaded guilty to underscores the serious nature of the charges brought against him. By imposing a lengthy prison term and a substantial fine, the court aims to send a strong message about the consequences of engaging in illicit drug activities.
Chambers’ case serves as a reminder of the detrimental effects of drug trafficking on communities. The presence of dangerous substances like fentanyl poses significant risks to public health and safety. Law enforcement agencies continue to combat drug-related crimes in order to protect residents and maintain law and order in Asheville and beyond.
The sentencing of Deveon Ambrose Chambers for drug trafficking underscores the commitment of authorities to hold individuals accountable for illegal drug activities. By imposing significant penalties, the court seeks to deter others from engaging in similar criminal behavior and safeguard the well-being of the community.
