Asheville Gears Up for a Colorful Fall Amid Heavy Rainfall Forecast

Asheville is buzzing with excitement as the vibrant hues of fall prepare to sweep across the Blue Ridge Mountains. However, before we pull out our sweaters and enjoy the fall festivities, it looks like we’ve got some heavy rainfall to deal with first. The forecast is predicting 100% chance of rain starting today, with potential downpours bringing anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain throughout the day. That’s right, folks—this is your official heads-up to grab those raincoats and umbrellas!

The Rainy Details

Expect periods of rain that could become quite heavy, especially as the day wears on. Winds will be breezy as well, ranging from an easterly 10 to 30 mph. The high for today will reach about 68°F before dipping down to a cooler 66°F tonight. With the possibility of flooding rains, it’s a good idea to stay safe and monitored for weather updates as the day progresses.

Early Signs of Fall Colors

Howard S. Neufeld, a biology professor at Appalachian State University, says we have more than 120 tree species in the area, which contributes to the unique and beautiful fall color we all look forward to.

Neufeld, who’s been tracking fall colors for over 16 years, predicts peak color will likely occur around mid-October for elevations around 3,000 feet. While the heavy rains we’re expecting today could add to that, it’s the alternating hot and cool temperatures from this summer that are truly setting the stage. After a warm, dry June, Asheville experienced a particularly wet July — more than double the average rainfall — which led to a lush environment for trees to thrive.

The Impact of Weather on Colors

Interestingly, the fluctuation in temperatures and rainfall this year means that some trees, like birches and tulip poplars, are already showing signs of turning color earlier than expected. Neufeld advises that while some trees may begin to change sooner, the warm temperatures in the coming days might slow down the full display of colors. The trees tend to drop their green pigments as nights cool off, unveiling vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and red.

Climate Change: A Factor in the Future

As we marvel at the stunning foliage, one thing we must keep in mind is that climate change is rearing its head, potentially shifting how we experience fall colors in the years to come. Robert Bardon, a forestry professor at NC State, notes that a warm, dry summer followed by early autumn rains usually results in the most brilliant foliage. Any disruption to that pattern could impact how vibrant our tree colors appear.

A Call to Action

It’s also worth mentioning how the beauty of fall colors can inspire us to think about conservation. According to Neufeld, visiting natural attractions can serve as a reminder of the beauty nature offers and spark a desire to protect these precious ecosystems. “I hope it puts into their minds the idea that we need to preserve these forests, so that their children can have the same experience they had,” he said.

Looking Ahead

So, even though we may be dodging raindrops today, let’s keep in mind the wonderful display of colors waiting for us as we head into October. And who knows? The rain today could just be what our trees need to put on a show-stopping performance this fall! So, grab your rain gear, but also mark your calendars to get outside and appreciate the vibrant colors that await as nature changes gears.
