Asheville Residents Given Extension for Food Assistance Applications Following Hurricane Helene

Asheville Residents: Important Update on Food Assistance

Hey there, Asheville folks! If you’ve been keeping an eye on the developments regarding food assistance after the recent challenges many of us have faced due to Hurricane Helene, we have some important news for you. The USDA has extended the deadline for residents in Buncombe County to apply for help purchasing food. So, let’s dive into what you need to know!

What is D-SNAP?

First off, let’s talk about the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). This program is tailored for those who were affected by the hurricane and are not currently enrolled in the regular Food and Nutrition Services program. So, if you’ve been struggling a bit more than usual since the disaster, this could be a helpful resource for you and your family.

Deadline Alert!

Mark your calendars because the deadline to apply is 4 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024. Yes, you heard that right! You still have a bit of time, but it’s crucial to take action sooner rather than later. Don’t wait until the last minute!

How to Apply?

If you’re interested in applying for D-SNAP, you’ll need to go in person to the Buncombe County Health and Human Services office, which is located at 40 Coxe Ave., Asheville. They’re available to assist you from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Just a helpful note: unfortunately, the online application process and call center have wrapped up, so in-person is the way to go. Bring with you any documents you think might help speed up your application process!

So, What’s the Status So Far?

As of the close of business on Wednesday, October 24, Buncombe County has issued a remarkable 4,276 cards, distributing a total of $2,553,456 in benefits to those in need. Additionally, there have been 370 cards distributed to customers via the state’s call center process. It’s great to see the community coming together and getting the help they need!

Need More Information?

If you have any lingering questions or need more information about early voting wait times, feel free to check out the official Buncombe County website. They have various resources available to keep you informed and help you navigate these times.

In Closing

In a time when so many have been impacted, this extension means a lot for families trying to get back on their feet. Remember to spread the word to fellow community members who might also benefit from this assistance. Let’s look out for one another, Asheville!

If you have any specific questions, or if you need assistance during the application process, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Buncombe County office directly at 828-253-5585 or through their official email.
