Gun Surrender Event in Asheville Encourages Safe Disposal of Firearms

Today’s burning question is about gun surrender and where in Asheville you can safely dispose of your firearms.

Local Resource for Gun Surrender

Not only are there local resources that can help gun owners dispose of unwanted firearms, but a new chapter of the national nonprofit RAWtools was launched in January by local artist blacksmith Scotty Utz. In its less than six months, RAWtools South has dismantled more than 100 firearms through safe surrender events, and they encourage people to contact them directly.

Upcoming Event

There’s an upcoming gun surrender event scheduled on June 8 at the First Baptist Church of Asheville. The process involves bringing the unloaded gun in the back or trunk of a vehicle. Trained volunteers will dismantle the gun following guidelines from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Transforming Guns into Tools

RAWtools repurposes the metal from guns to create sculptures, tools, pendants, and more with the aim of promoting peace and justice.

Small Acts of Courage

Stan Wilson, coordinator of RAWtools South, views the gun surrender events as small acts of courage that can combat fear and promote hope, fostering understanding and collaboration in addressing gun violence reduction.

Join the Initiative

If you have unwanted firearms and wish to surrender them for safe disposal, consider participating in the Guns to Gardens Safe Surrender event on June 8. Contact RAWtools South directly for more information on how to donate your guns anonymously and receive a gift card as a token of appreciation.

Conclusion

In a time of heightened fear and division, initiatives like gun surrender events offer a ray of hope and a path towards peace. By taking simple yet meaningful steps to dispose of unwanted firearms responsibly, individuals can contribute to a safer and more harmonious community.
