Asheville Honors Three Remarkable Women with Annual Rosa Parks Award

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County’s COPE committee recently announced the recipients of The Rosa Parks Award, recognizing women in the Asheville community who have made significant contributions towards fostering inclusivity, advocating for social justice, promoting nonviolent principles, and inspiring activism.

Recognition of Outstanding Contributions

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 19 at 5:30 pm at Black Wall Street AVL, honoring the following exceptional women:

Mrs. Johnnie Nelson Grant

Mrs. Johnnie Nelson Grant, the founder and publisher of The Urban News, has been instrumental in supporting and showcasing African American communities, businesses, and professionals in Asheville and beyond. Her work has transcended racial boundaries and brought communities together.

Becky Stone

Becky Stone, an African American history storyteller, has utilized her talents to educate and entertain audiences, drawing from her rich background in theater and performance arts. Her dedication to storytelling has contributed to preserving and sharing the African American experience.

Renee White

Renee White, a native of Asheville and President of the East End Valley Street Neighborhood Association, has been a tireless advocate for community investments and policy changes. Her leadership has empowered the local community and ensured access to free elections.

Celebrating Inspirational Women

The Rosa Parks Award serves as a tribute to the outstanding contributions of these remarkable women. Through their passion, dedication, and activism, they have embodied the spirit of Rosa Parks and championed social justice and equality in Asheville and Buncombe County.
