Updated August 28, 2024 – An unsettling sequence of events has left one man dead in a residential neighborhood of Asheville, North Carolina, prompting an active police investigation.

Sequence of Events

The events unfolded in the late afternoon of Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Plunged into fear and panic, several residents of North Asheville telephoned emergency services, reporting a man openly brandishing a rifle and menacing nearby civilians. Remarkably, the suspect is also reported to have assaulted a city contract worker with a shovel.

Authorities quickly descended to the intersection of Chatham Road and Laurel Avenue in response to these alarming calls. Upon arriving, police officers challenged the suspect, instructing him to put down his weapon. Tragically, the confrontation swiftly escalated as the man refused these commands, instead turning his rifle towards the officers.

The Shooting Incident and Aftermath

It was at this point an officer-involved shooting occurred, with officers discharging their weapons in response to the presented threat. Following the shooting, the suspect retreated into his home on Chatham Road, subsequently barricading himself inside.

The police later confirmed that the suspect was found deceased within the property. The incident, remarkably, did not result in any injuries amongst the responding Asheville police officers.

Investigation Underway

The high-stakes incident attracted a rapid response from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, who arrived on the scene by 8:30 p.m. The bureau is now tasked with leading the required investigative work, piecing together the exact sequence of events surrounding the man’s death.

In light of the ongoing investigation, local authorities have requested the public to avoid the area of Merrimon Avenue and Chatham Road for their safety and the smooth running of the probe.
