Authorities are investigating both cases as they seek to provide closure to the families affected and ensure road safety.

Tragic Motorcycle Crash in Asheville Claims Life of Local Rider

Asheville, a city known for its beautiful mountains and vibrant culture, was shaken by a tragic motorcycle accident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon. Motorcycles are a common sight on the roads here, especially as the weather gets warmer, but this particular incident has left many in the community heartbroken.

The Collision

The Asheville Police Department was called to the scene of the crash at approximately 2:30 p.m. near 320 New Leicester Highway. Initial reports suggest that a motorcycle collided with another vehicle, although details surrounding the wreck remain limited. Emergency crews worked quickly at the scene, and forensic teams were deployed to gather evidence, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

The Rider’s Condition

Details about the motorcycle rider’s injuries have not been disclosed by authorities. However, the rider was rushed to Mission Hospital for treatment. As news of the crash spread, many in the community expressed their concern and heartbreak for the rider and their family.

Traffic Disruptions

Due to the accident, the southbound lane of New Leicester Highway has been closed, causing traffic to be detoured through the center lanes. Commuters are advised to plan ahead, as delays are likely while the investigation continues and the scene is cleared.

A Devastating Weekend

2:55 p.m. The earlier accident took place on Hendersonville Road and claimed the life of a 44-year-old rider named Brandon Scott Owenby. Owenby was riding a 1999 Kawasaki ZX600-G motorcycle when he was involved in a collision with a 2021 Honda Pilot. The driver of the Honda Pilot attempted to make a left turn from Gala Drive onto Hendersonville Road.

Sadly, Owenby was taken to Mission Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving. This accident is particularly devastating as it occurred just three days after Owenby celebrated his birthday, deepening the sorrow of those who knew him.

Charges Following the Incident

In connection with Owenby’s tragic death, the driver of the Honda Pilot, Stephen Michael Poandl, aged 44, has been charged. It has been reported that Poandl turned himself in to authorities on Monday and was subsequently booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility. Following his booking, he was released under a $20,000 unsecured bond.

Ongoing Investigations

Both crashes remain under investigation, and local authorities are working diligently to piece together the circumstances surrounding each incident. The Asheville Police Department encourages anyone who may have information about either crash to contact them at 828-252-1110. Community members are hoping for a swift resolution to these investigations, as the losses felt are significant.

Community Remembers

The motorcycle community in Asheville is tight-knit, and the losses of these two riders resonate deeply. Friends and loved ones are coming together to support one another during this time of grief, reminding all of us just how precious life is and the importance of safe driving practices.

As Asheville mourns the loss of its riders, let us take a moment to reflect on the fragility of life and the need to look out for one another on the road. Stay safe out there, folks!
