City of Asheville kicks off the Patton Ave Sidewalk Accessibility Improvement project

The City of Asheville recently announced the commencement of the Patton Ave Sidewalk Accessibility Improvement project, aimed at enhancing accessibility along the section of Patton Avenue between Asheland and Coxe Avenues. This project is a crucial step towards achieving compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and addressing existing defects in the area.

Phase One: Removal and Replacement

The first phase of the project will involve the removal and replacing of existing sidewalks and trees. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, March 12, construction will officially begin with the focus on the south side of the street. This phase will require the full closure of the sidewalk and right lane between Asheland and Coxe Avenues.

Construction is anticipated to last approximately four to five weeks, with efforts being made to minimize disruptions to businesses and pedestrian access. Despite the closure, businesses in the area will remain open, and traffic will still be able to turn onto and off Patton Avenue.

Upcoming Phases

The City aims to complete the entire project, including the final phase, by August. The improvements will greatly enhance accessibility and safety for all pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities.

Importance of ADA Compliance

The Patton Ave Sidewalk Accessibility Improvement project is a vital initiative towards achieving ADA compliance, ensuring that public spaces are accessible to all individuals. By addressing the existing deficiencies and enhancing sidewalks, the City of Asheville is demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Community Support

The project has received positive feedback from the Asheville Downtown Association and local residents who recognize the importance of improving sidewalk accessibility in the city. The completion of this project will not only benefit pedestrians but also contribute to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the area.

Conclusion

As the Patton Ave Sidewalk Accessibility Improvement project gets underway, Asheville residents can look forward to a more accessible and pedestrian-friendly environment. The City’s commitment to ADA compliance and infrastructure enhancements underscores its dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive community for all.
