The Asheville Police Department is currently investigating an assault that occurred at ‘Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair’ (ACAB) in Asheville, North Carolina. The incident took place on Saturday, June 29, during a seminar at the West Asheville Library.
According to police reports, officers responded to a fight in progress at the library where approximately 80 to 100 people were attending a seminar titled “Strategic Lessons From Palestinian Resistance.” Upon arrival, authorities observed a crowd dispersing and identified three victims: David Moritz, Monica Buckley, and Bob Campbell.
David Moritz and Monica Buckley, both of Jewish descent, stated that they attended the event to gain knowledge about their community. Buckley, who live-streamed the presentation due to safety concerns, mentioned that the violence ensued when her phone was stolen and she attempted to retrieve it. All three victims sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment.
In a follow-up interview, Moritz reiterated their peaceful intentions at the seminar, emphasizing their concern about antisemitism in the local community. He emphasized that they are not responsible for the events in Israel and called for an end to violence.
Expressing solidarity with the Jewish community, Moritz urged a swift halt to the violence and antisemitism. He recognized the arrested individual, Taylor Danielle Zarkin, as one of the assailants and stressed the importance of addressing such incidents promptly.
The Asheville Police Department confirmed two charges of resisting, delay, and obstruct against Zarkin in connection with the assault. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking further information on the incident.
Local establishments, including Firestorm Books, the host of ACAB, have been contacted for comments, with responses pending. The Asheville community has reacted strongly to the assault, condemning all forms of violence and advocating for peace and tolerance.
News 13 is scheduled to interview the Asheville Police Department for updates on the investigation on Tuesday, July 2. Stay connected for the latest developments in this case.
