Asheville Police Seeking Help in Murder Case
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The Asheville Police Department (APD) is turning to the community for assistance in locating a man wanted for the tragic murder of a young woman. Darren Lamon Clayton, 34, is the prime suspect in the death of Makayla Lashea Harrison, and authorities are urging anyone with information to reach out.
A Chilling Discovery
On Saturday, November 9, officers responded to a welfare check at a residence on South French Broad Avenue after Harrison’s mother expressed concern over her daughter’s well-being. When police arrived at around 11 a.m., they encountered a heartbreaking scene. Officers found Harrison deceased, having suffered a gunshot wound in her home. Captain Joe Silberman of the APD explained that the police quickly identified Clayton as the primary suspect, significantly aided by Harrison’s family.
Charges Filed
As a result of their investigation, the department has formally charged Clayton with first-degree murder. This case has been identified as one connected to domestic violence, highlighting a troubling reality many individuals face in their relationships. Captain Silberman noted that there are local resources available for victims of domestic violence, including organizations like Helpmate, which offers support and shelter for those in need.
Criminal History
Clayton’s past has raised red flags for law enforcement. He has an extensive criminal record and has been flagged as a violent offender. Interestingly, he was arrested just a couple of weeks earlier on October 28, but was released only days before the tragic events unfolded. This fact raises questions about the systems in place to protect individuals from repeat offenders.
Staying Safe
While police believe Clayton is still in the Asheville area, they do not consider him a threat to the general public at this time. They’ve reassured residents that they are actively working on the case and are pursuing every lead. The department is particularly keen on gathering information from anyone who may have seen or heard anything related to the case or Clayton’s whereabouts.
