News Summary

During their annual retreat, the Asheville City Council focused on recovery strategies following the impact of Helene. Over 18 months, they plan to enact guiding principles fostering community resilience and collaboration. Key priorities, shaped by resident input, include addressing people’s needs, housing solutions, environmental infrastructure, and economic support. The Council emphasizes accountability and transparency as they engage with the community for successful recovery initiatives.

Asheville City Council Charts Path for Helene Recovery

The Asheville City Council gathered for their annual retreat on February 13 and 14, aiming to tackle a crucial topic for the community: recovery from the recent challenges posed by Helene. Over the next 18 months, the Council is gearing up to implement a series of guiding principles and projects that highlight the city’s dedication to rebuilding.

A Vision Rooted in Resilience

During the retreat, the Council embraced a vision for recovery that is both inspiring and focused on the needs of the community. This vision is grounded in what many are calling a “rooted resilience,” as residents come together to rise in unity, repair with care, and prepare for a brighter tomorrow. These guiding themes can provide a much-needed framework to move forward, driving efforts across multiple areas of recovery.

Establishing Guiding Principles

In an effort to enhance their decision-making processes, the Council also identified several guiding principles to steer their actions. These principles include:

  • Community centered policies that focus on the needs of our residents
  • Accountability & Transparency to ensure open communication
  • Preserving Asheville’s uniqueness while rebuilding
  • Emphasizing innovation in recovery methods
  • Leveraging strength and resilience from past experiences
  • Commitment to sustainability to protect our environment
  • Fostering collaboration among community stakeholders

Identifying Priority Areas

The Council did not shy away from pinpointing four vital priority areas for the Helene recovery process, shaped by data courtesy of a recent survey and community workshops. These priorities include:

  • People – focusing on the needs and healing of individuals
  • Housing – creating fair and accessible housing solutions
  • Infrastructure/Environment – strengthening our foundation and ecological health
  • Economy – supporting and revitalizing local businesses

Listening to the Community

It’s clear that the voice of the community is crucial, and the insights gathered during a workshop on February 4, along with participation from over 6,800 residents in the Helene Recovery Priorities Survey, played a significant role in formulating these priorities. Concerns highlighted include strengthening infrastructure, expanding housing solutions, supporting economic recovery, enhancing food security, and keeping sustainability at the forefront.

Looking Ahead

The Council’s dynamic discussions also centered on what success might look like in both 12 months and three years across the established priority areas. To ensure progress, city staff and facilitators will be compiling notes from these sessions to draft action steps. A presentation of the draft priority actions will be scheduled for a future work session, ensuring an ongoing dialogue on recovery.

Engagement Continues

Although public comments were not welcomed during the retreat, residents had the opportunity to engage by tuning in via the live stream on YouTube. A notable visitor during the retreat was the Secretary of Homeland Security, who took time to visit Asheville, learn about recovery efforts, and connect with survivors and volunteers from local organizations.

The communal spirit is alive in Asheville, as the Council aims to implement these priorities in a manner that reflects the strength and unity of the community. With ongoing public engagement and dedication to the guiding principles, the journey towards a thriving Asheville continues to unfold.
