As the sun peeks through the clouds in Asheville, North Carolina, residents find themselves adjusting to a new normal in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Almost a month has passed since the storm wreaked havoc on western North Carolina, and while the winds have calmed, the community is still feeling the ripples of its impact. Fortunately, the spirit of the people here shines as brightly as ever, as help is still very much alive with organizations like the Red Cross stepping up to lend a hand.
As of now, the Red Cross is actively operating eight shelters across seven counties, providing refuge for around 300 individuals who are still in need of assistance. In addition to shelter, the organization is delivering hot meals and emergency supplies to those hardest hit by the storm. Since their relief efforts began, they’ve worked hand in hand with local officials and community partners to open over 80 shelters statewide. They’ve helped provide more than 20,000 overnight stays for people seeking a safe place to rest.
As the days go by, comfort food has been a crucial aspect of the recovery process. The Red Cross reports that they’ve served nearly 400,000 meals, water, and snacks to individuals in need. This incredible effort is made possible thanks to nearly 600 trained volunteers from all across the country, including right here in North Carolina. These dedicated folks are rolling up their sleeves and working hard to help ease the suffering in affected communities.
While the immediate response is vital, the aftermath of such a disaster often calls for long-term recovery strategies as well. Though the primary focus is currently on addressing urgent needs, the Red Cross understands that communities will face varied challenges over time. The timeline for recovery will differ for each individual and each area, so ongoing support is essential.
If you’re looking for a way to give back, the Red Cross is calling for volunteers who can offer their time and skills. Every little bit helps, and the organization welcomes anyone who can spare a few hours or days to step in. There are many ways to pitch in, whether it be through assisting in shelters, organizing activities for those staying there, or serving meals to those in need.
We had the chance to meet Mark and Ann Dunkel, a couple from North Carolina who recently decided to take action by volunteering with the Red Cross. At a Community Care Center in Asheville, they were smiling and welcoming guests, providing them with information about the services available to them. Mark shared his thoughts on why he felt compelled to help, saying, “If I’m OK, there’s no excuse not to help.” It’s a sentiment that many locals are echoing as they rally together to support each other in this time of need.
If you’re inspired to help and want to make a meaningful difference, becoming a volunteer is simple. You can reach out to the Red Cross by emailing VolunteerHelene@redcross.org or visit the Red Cross website to find more information on how you can contribute to this important cause.
The people of Asheville and surrounding communities are standing strong, united in their determination to overcome the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. In times of crisis, it’s heartening to see how compassion and community spirit can shine through, bringing hope and healing to those affected.
