Spring in Asheville Sees Bears Roaming

Answer Man: Spring in Asheville Sees Bears Roaming

A reader asks about what looks to be a recent uptick in activity by the city’s largest mammal, Ursus americanus.

Black Bears on the Move

While it’s not entirely uncommon to see bears wandering around Asheville nowadays, there has been a noticeable increase in bear sightings recently. With the arrival of spring, these majestic creatures are becoming more active as they leave their winter dens in search of food. Young male bears may also be on the lookout for their own territory, leading to more frequent encounters with humans.

Wildlife Commission’s Response

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has acknowledged the surge in bear activity in Asheville and Western North Carolina. According to Colleen Olfenbuttel, the Wildlife Commission’s black bear biologist, human expansion into bear territory and the presence of food sources in residential areas are contributing factors to the increased sightings.

Olfenbuttel advises residents to follow the BearWise Basics, which include removing food attractants, properly securing trash cans, and ensuring a clean outdoor environment to discourage bears from venturing too close to human habitats.

Encountering Bear Cubs

During this time of year, it is not uncommon to come across bear cubs that appear to be alone. In most cases, these cubs are simply waiting for their mothers to return from foraging. However, if you suspect a cub has been orphaned, it is important not to handle, feed, or disturb the cub. Instead, report the sighting to the N.C. Wildlife Helpline for further assistance.

Living Responsibly with Black Bears

For information on coexisting harmoniously with black bears and preventing potential conflicts, residents can visit Bearwise.org. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s website also provides valuable resources on black bears in North Carolina, offering insights into their behavior and conservation efforts.

Stay Informed, Stay Safe

As spring brings about increased bear activity in Asheville and the surrounding areas, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife. By adopting responsible practices and being mindful of our impact on bear habitats, we can foster a harmonious relationship with these magnificent creatures.
