In the heart of Asheville, North Carolina, the community is showing an incredible spirit of resilience and support in the wake of the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. While many are still recovering from the impacts of this powerful storm, organizations like the Salvation Army have stepped up to provide much-needed assistance to those affected.
Since the storm hit, a basecamp has been established in North Asheville, serving as a hub for volunteers from across the country who are eager to lend a helping hand. Christopher Farrand, a training and volunteer coordinator from Boston, is leading a team on the ground. He noted that while some improvements have been seen, many residents are still in need of support. “They’ve been through so much that if we can still help them with some food pantry supplies or cleaning supplies to help them take a little edge off while they rebuild, that’s what we’re committed to,” Farrand shared.
The atmosphere at the basecamp could best be described as a “mobile mini city,” complete with bunk houses, bathrooms, a command post, and lots of food storage. Volunteers are tirelessly preparing meals and organizing day-to-day operations. Since Helene, the Salvation Army has impressively served nearly 110,000 meals to those in Asheville. This includes hot meals as well as pantry boxes, snack boxes, tarps, blankets, and cleanup kits to assist families in their recovery efforts.
For Farrand, this mission is personal. His family resides in the area and was impacted by the storm as well. “It was five days before I heard from my parents,” he revealed, showcasing the emotional weight this situation holds for those involved. Even after he returns to Boston, Farrand emphasizes that the Salvation Army of Asheville will continue to offer steadfast support to the community.
The Salvation Army has not only focused on recovery from the storm but continues to provide its regular services too. They are currently sheltering 65 individuals, some who were homeless before Helene and others who found themselves in similar situations due to the storm. There’s also excitement brewing as they prepare for a community Thanksgiving meal for over 500 people. This gathering aims to offer a sense of normalcy to families in need during the trying holiday season.
Amidst all this, the organization faces challenges of its own. Some parts of their shelter were damaged by the storm, but they are hustling to make the necessary repairs. Once the rebuilding process is complete, it’s expected that they’ll be able to accommodate an additional 20 people, further expanding their efforts to provide safe housing.
The Salvation Army is always looking for community support to keep its operations up and running smoothly. Every bit of help counts—whether it’s donating supplies, funds, or volunteering time. Anyone interested can drop off donations at their location on 204 Haywood Street or contribute through their website.
As Asheville navigates this challenging time, the community spirit shines brightly. It’s heartwarming to see organizations and individuals working hand-in-hand to bring hope, nourishment, and shelter to those in dire need. The road to recovery is long, but with such a strong support network, the people of Asheville are sure to rise again, stronger than ever.
