Asheville Teen Brings Attention to Lesser-known D-Day Squadron

A 15-year-old from Asheville is using his expertise to bring global attention to a squadron with a remarkable story that helped liberate many towns in France during WWII. Cash Simmons, 15, is preserving the history of the 24th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized after discovering memories of his great-grandfather who served in the unit. Born in Waynesville, NC, SSgt. Williams Stephens enlisted in the Army in 1943 and became a staff sergeant in the squadron.

Preserving History

Cash connected with journalist Mike Hind to showcase the squadron’s untold tales of bravery. Hind described the men of the 24th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron as “unsung heroes” and highlighted their early arrival on French soil during WWII.

Collaborative Effort

Cash and Hind work together on research for an upcoming book about the squadron, with Cash providing valuable original documentation that revealed crucial details about the men who landed on Utah Beach. This collaboration has led to a deeper understanding of the squadron’s contributions to the war effort.

International Recognition

Thanks to Cash’s insights, the squadron’s actions and the men involved are receiving international recognition. Cash’s connection to the squadron through his great-grandfather has made him an essential figure in preserving their legacy. Plans are underway to honor Cash for his contribution and dedication to the squadron’s history.
