Asheville City Council Approves Over $4 Million in Relief Funds for Residents and Businesses Affected by Tropical Storm Helene

Asheville City Council Steps Up for Residents Affected by Tropical Storm Helene

Asheville has recently been rocked by the impacts of Tropical Storm Helene, and the city is taking significant steps to provide relief for its communities. In a firm and compassionate response, the Asheville City Council has recently approved over $4 million in grants, targeted specifically to help residents and businesses get back on their feet after the storm’s disruption.

Focused Relief for Businesses

During a recent Agenda Briefing session, the council revealed its plans for the distribution of these crucial funds, entrusting experienced nonprofit partners to manage the various programs. One of the standout initiatives is the allocation of $704,000 in Business Stabilization funds by Mountain BizWorks. This program will offer grants of up to $25,000, specifically designed for eligible businesses located within city limits and employing fewer than 200 full-time workers.

What’s more, the city is prioritizing those businesses situated in low to moderate-income neighborhoods and those that play a crucial role in hiring low to moderate-income individuals. This thoughtful approach ensures that the support reaches the areas and communities that need it the most.

Housing Assistance for Residents

It’s not just businesses feeling the effects of the storm; many residents are in dire need as well. In this regard, Eblen Charities has been tasked with distributing $500,000 in Rental Assistance funds. This assistance will be aimed at households earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), but with a sharp focus on those households that are earning below 60% AMI.

The goal is clear: to ensure that all residents, especially those who might face additional barriers such as disabilities or storm-related losses, have equitable access to support during this critical time.

Home Repairs on the Horizon

Furthermore, to address the physical damage inflicted on homes by the storm, the Asheville Regional Coalition for Home Repair will be managing $750,000 in Home Repair funds. This initiative, too, is keenly focused on assisting households that earn below 60% AMI, helping them make necessary home repairs and restore safety and comfort in their living spaces.

Urgent Need for Information

With so much at stake, the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Nikki Reid, the Director of Community and Economic Development, called attention to the pressing needs of the locals, stating, “We recognize that time is of the essence and that community members will be eager to find more information on how to apply for these grants.” This sentiment highlights not only the swift action being taken but also the compassion driving these initiatives.

Looking Ahead

As the city gears up to help its residents and businesses bounce back, more information regarding the application processes for these grants will be shared soon. Those interested in seeking assistance are encouraged to stay informed and be ready to apply as the details unfold. This is a crucial time for Asheville, as its community rallies together to heal and recover from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene.

For ongoing updates regarding the city’s response and further details on how to access assistance, residents are encouraged to keep an eye on official city communications. With an outpouring of support through these grants, Asheville is proving that it stands strong, even in the face of adversity.
