Local WWII Veteran Embarks on Inaugural Honor Flight
Hal Hogstrom, a 99-year-old World War II veteran, is set to embark on his first Blue Ridge Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. this April 27. Hogstrom expressed his anticipation for the journey, which will take him to the war memorials in the nation’s capital.
A Journey of Remembrance
Hogstrom reminisced about his previous visits to Washington, D.C., sharing his poignant experiences with different war memorials. Reflecting on a trip to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with his family, including his daughter from Korea, Hogstrom described the emotional impact of paying tribute to those who served.
During his upcoming Honor Flight, he eagerly looks forward to connecting with fellow World War II veterans onboard. Hogstrom expressed his desire to learn more about their service and wartime experiences, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared history among the veterans.
An Unexpected Journey into Service
Hogstrom recounted his unexpected path into military service, having been drafted into the U.S. Army after a brief stint at college. Originally part of the Army Specialized Training Program, he eventually transitioned to infantry training, which culminated in his volunteering for airborne training in the 541st Parachute Infantry.
From Louisiana to Japan
His military journey took him from basic training in Louisiana to the Philippines at the height of World War II. Engaged in training and preparation until the war’s end, Hogstrom’s unit was later stationed in Japan for occupation duty following Victory over Japan Day. His service continued until his separation from the U.S. Army in 1946.
An Honorable Commemoration
The Blue Ridge Honor Flight provides veterans like Hogstrom with the opportunity to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C. free of charge. With 90 veterans on board for the upcoming flight, including representatives from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam era, the journey promises a meaningful tribute to their service and sacrifice.
Hogstrom expressed his gratitude for the Honor Flights program, enabling veterans to partake in collective remembrance and honor. As he prepares for this remarkable journey, Hogstrom’s anticipation and appreciation reflect a lifelong commitment to service and camaraderie.
